Hey, i know im a bit off-topic, but i just wanted to know the mechanics of diuretic use in treatment of hypertension/high blood pressure?? does anyone know of some websites that can help yo get more information??

Diuretics work in different parts of the renal tubules depending on the diuretic. In simple terms this causes you to lose more water, which is coming from the blood. Basically the less fluid in the blood the less the heart works which helps decrease blood pressure. That's a really basic way to look at it.

The desktop version of Micromedex does a nice job of explaining the mechanism of action of diuretics, such as hydrochlorothiazide, as it pertains to managing high blood pressure. If I recall right, this diuretic has a vasodilatory effect, which is the proposed mechanism for how it helps lower blood pressure.

You are correct, the actual diuretic effect of thiazides wears off wuickly (in about 1 month of taking it) and it is the peripheral vasodilation that causes the drop in BP

(you stole one of my fav pimp questions for rotation students. most poeple only think it is a diuretic)
