I just bombed my first physics test, after studying a bunch for it. I feel like I can't do this stuff, or thaty I can only do it after I do a problem and see the solution. I had my formula sheet and everything, it was just downright crazy hard. What do I do? I don't want this to mess up my GPA,m but luckily its stellar enough to not have a HUGE impact...but this class is 4 credits. Will dental schools care if I can pull a B or a C. I used to like physics...but this stuff is hard!

What do you mean by "bombed"? Do you mean failed? Because since you're used to all A's, I wouldn't be suprised if "bombed" to you means a C.

Anyway, chill out. Go to tutoring or something. With your GPA a B in physics will not kill your chances.

I highly doubt dental schools will care if you get a B or a C, since your GPA is so "stellar" 😉 But in all seriousness, one more B or even one more C shouldn't hurt your chances.. However, I will say this -- one B or C definitely has more impact on a higher cumulative GPA than a lower one (I know this from recent experience... 😡 ) Either way, you'll be fine. No worries 🙂 And you never really know how you did until you get your exam back and finish off the semester.

I felt the same way in Physics this past year. Every test was basically hanging by the seat of my pants. Our class used a bell curve, so it didn't really matter how bad you did, it mattered more how badly everybody did. For example, my highest test scores were actually my lowest percentage-wise because they were on tests that were terribly hard. My only science coursework B's came in second semester Physics and Physics Lab.

I don't think that B in Physics is that big of a deal, though it will lower your GPA from the high 3's a little bit. It is too bad that GPA is so important. Physics would be a hell of a lot more enjoyable (it is very interesting and ties together well with the other sciences) if there were not just demands on getting an A.

Tutors can be a big help with concepts if you have the money.

Hang in there. The grades are curved, and the class seems impossible. I got Cs and below on every test and crawled out with a B. 😀 I took it without calculus.

If you have Biochem with Dr. A, get your hands on all the old tests. The Qs are recycled. Don't even bother with his notes. They're worse than chicken scratches...

I remember my first physics test... I got around a 50%. got scared and studied my butt off for the next test and got 100% on it, went on to 4.0 the class and even tutor another student. I was an all A student like you and i studied ok for the first test but i guess since i remembered some of the stuff from high school i felt that it was easier than it really was and didn't practice as much as i should have. Do not get discouraged just because of doing bad on your first test, physics does take a little getting used to. do as many practice problems as you can get your hands on and i bet you pull off an A or B. good luck 👍

Oh me and physics have had a hard time together. The biggest thing was that I was scared of it. I first took physics and got a grade in the 15th percentile! I was scared out of my mind and dropped it. This had never happened to me. Ever since that day i was scared of physics for all tests and every test. The next smester i took physics i got a 100 percent on the test and I went on to get an A in both physics. These classes were very hard for me and I probably studied about 3-4 hours a day for the class as it was 5 credit hours at my school. I'm telling you just work hard (even if you hate the class) and you'll be fine. I know its hard studying for a class that you dislike. But at the end you'll get that grade you want.

hahahaha yes physics does suck...but it is rather alluring to me. Very interesting. And in regards to biochem...I have Dr.Lyons...I have to take the CHM biochem instead of the biology one because of my major...what fun!

Not to rain on this thread, but seriously, what kind of real professor would actually let you use a formula sheet on a test? I know there are many out there who do just that. So be it. But just realize there are some of us out here who didn't have that luxury and still pulled out our "A's" the old-fashioned way. We didn't whine and moan about it--we sacked up and pounded the course. I suggest you do the same because this thread is starting to make your 3.9 GPA look less impressive. A 3.9 GPA isn't hard to pull if you're playing in the minor leagues.

Haha I wasn't going to waste my time responding to this guy, but I guess I will for his own sake. Point is Slash, I go to a pretty good school, very far from any "minor league". I think allowing students to use a formula sheet (a handwritten page of notes) is by all means fair. I also don't think being a biochemistry major and doing a minor places me in a minor league either. I think maybe you're jealous? Jealous of the fact that I'll be in dental school and then graduated, making millions, and not lend you a single penny as I cruise up to the stoplight in my new porsche. Heh. I was actually a physics major for my first two years in undergrad. It's definitely one of those subjects that requires putting two and two together rather than straight up memorization. That's why many biology majors have a hard time with that class.

It is getting harder to believe you have a 3.9 GPA.

Anyways, physics is hard and it was probably the hardest class I took at the time. First semester, I received a C and then the next achieved an A. It just took some time for learn how to study for physic and learn what the professor really wants us to understand. So, keep working and be willing to look for help and change your study methods if they are not working for you.

B or a C in physics is nothing to worry about.

You must feel like a big boy, taking your super duper hard physics class! I bet they even let you have the same cups as grown-ups get to use, instead of giving you the little sippie lids all the rest of us had to use in college.

If you are taking physics as a summer course, dexa, my sympathies to you. I took the full year myself over a summer while working full time and it nearly killed me. I bombed an exam, and by bomb I mean a low 'F'. I earned my A's by spending every free minute doing homework, studying, staying after class, and forming a loose study group. Needless to say it was torture but if you are dedicated then I have faith you can pull that grade.

And for what it is worth, my instructor also allowed a forumla sheet. Unlike other instructors that prefer to test their student's ability to merely plug in numbers blandly gauge their students ability to mindlessly recall information, my instructor emphasized the need to understand the principles at work behind the formula and how they interacted and related to not only themselves but also other phenomena. As such much of the time the 'cheat sheet' was of little help and I understand how a test, such as dexa's, could be hard even with such an 'aide'.

Physics at UF is hard w/ or w/o a formula sheet. Just keep doing practice problems. Also, Dr. Muttalib is a physics professor that would most likely help you out. He's the absolute best.
