Hello people of SDN,

I'm a currently in the spring quarter of my sophomore year, and I'm just looking for some feedback on how I'm doing. After reading a lot of posts in WAMC and seeing how many EC's some people have, I'm seriously starting to feel like mine are inadequate. Here's the summary:

cGPA: 3.68 (half of my B's are from ochem, now that I'm finished with that I should be able to get it to 3.75 - 3.80 by graduation)

sGPA: Haven't calculated, most likely 3.5-3.6ish. Should be able to raise in the next couple years

Clinical Volunteering:

- 80 hours in the ER (4 hrs/week over the last 2 quarters). I did this through an internship my school offers, and since it's only a 2 quarter internship I sadly wasn't able to continue =(.

Non-clinical Volunteering:

- 70 hours at a homeless transitional home/shelter (4 hrs every couple weeks for the last year or so). Plan on continuing until graduation.
- 50 hours from a 2 week medical "mission" trip to Guatemala last summer... I've heard adcoms see this as fluff.

Employment:

- ~ 200 hours as a Calculus Tutor (8-12 hours per week for the last two quarters). Plan on continuing until graduation, assuming I'm rehired each year.

Research:

- Just began in a genetics lab this week. The position is a one year commitment, where I work 12 hours/week during the school year and anywhere from 12-40 hours/week over the summer, so by this time next year I will have 500+ hours.

Shadowing:

- None currently, planning on getting at least 50+ this coming summer

That's about all I can think of right now. Honestly, I just feel like I have nothing unique... I'm a white male from California with cookie cutter EC's. I'm planning on taking a gap year, so that I can include grades and EC's from senior year in my app. I would love to hear any input/suggestions on what I should focus on improving, especially from adcoms.

Thanks!

Your ECs aren't bad, but I think you need more hours in all of them. The calculus tutor is good as med schools like teaching experiences. The key with ECs isn't necessarily grandiosity, but sustained commitment.

Agree with the above. Also, consider adding a significant peer leadership role if you can. Taking some initiative to meet a need you see at the homeless shelter would be nice to see, where you organize others to meet a goal.

Be sure at least some shadowing is office-care based, ideally with a primary care doc.

A poster or presentation at the minimum (preferably off campus) would help show your research productivity.

Do you have any sports, hobbies, or artistic endeavors that you can include on the application? Since you are from California, you would benefit from something out of the ordinary that makes you memorable.
