Can your private life influence your ability to retain your seat in dental school? Let's say I was arrested and it appeared in the local news, or I posed nude and was found out, or was caught smoking dope, visiting a strip club and so on. I think school's would be worried about their reputation or about what a patient's impression of a provider may be. I think you might get booted for these "infractions".

What do you guys think?

well it def is not how a person who is going to a profesional career should act, but i dn't think a school has a right to kick you out based on these things.. unless you signed something at the begining of the term saying that if you did something bad in the community you may be dismissed from the school.

MsPurtell, if your looking for someone to go to strip clubs with and smoke crack.....you should've just said so. Remember if you're going to smoke weed just don't get caught. Also be very careful about swiping that leftover Fentanyl - oh yea always start the IV in your leg and tape it well that way you don't have to make needle tracks everywhere.

Seriously, I think getting caught using drugs before you killed one of your patients would probably be handled with probation, drug screens, AA/NA and a second chance. Remember addiction is a disease.

I'm not so sure about what the school could legally do if one of their students made some nude pictures or was arrested and it was in the paper.

There are plenty of people who do have a felony record and are in and graduating from dental schools - my program director does a background check and said every couple years they will get 2 or 3 applicants who fail the background check due to felony convictions.

He even had someone one year who never graduated dental school (was kicked out end of 3rd year) furnish a fake diploma and transcripts - it was halfway through the residency before this was found out.

Of course he was asked to leave the residency. 😱

Really? This surprises me. I figured they'd automatically eliminate any applicant with a felony record. A felony! That's a pretty big deal.

Makes sense.....thanks for the input.

Uh, gee, all that wasn't really what I was talking about. But, thanks for the input.....you know an awful lot about that subject!

I'm rather surprised at that too.

I don't know how many schools specifically address this sort of thing, but as long as it's not illegal, I doubt any single event, even if potentially embarrassing, would lead to any significant disciplinary measures. If someone was a chronic offender, though, the school might eventually prosecute it under whatever professional conduct code it uses.

...That's it? How about being charged with practicing without a license during the second & third years of residency?

Well, the PD didn't go into too much detail about what happened to this person but at the least they were asked to leave.

I also was surprised by the felony comment of the PD but he claims every couple years someone fails the background check due to a felony conviction. I wonder if dental schools do a background check. I don't think they do because I had to fill out a special authorization for my residency that I don't remember filling out for dental school??

Anyway, it surprised me too.

Anything that is not against the law shouldn't have any effect on your official school status. Even if it were I think it would have to be a situation that involved abusing your privelges at the school. I believe your private life is your private life. You can be as freaky as you like, but be wary of your fellow students. They are like a pack of wolves looking for a weakness. If they find some dirt on you they will start the rumor mill.

I don't smoke pot, but I don't have a problem with people who do. Several of my freinds are casual pot smokers. So one night out I am hanging with one of my stoned buddies at the pub when I bump into school mates (Korean Girl) she hears that my friend is high and immediately lumps him and I in with Charles Manson. Needless to say the entire asian half of my class ostricized me. 🙂

There was a girl here a few years back that made a little money on the side posing nude on the internet. Somehow word got around and pics were circulating amongst the students and profs and they loved it (I think I got a copy somewhere on my computer). Anyways. what happened to her? Well she got into our Ortho program with a 3.0 gpa and that's all she wrote.

It's not called a felony because it's minor. We're not talking about stealing a donut from a 7/11. This is rape, murder, burglary, fraud, narcotics trafficking, extortion, etc...

Assault and battery, which are serious offenses, are misdemeanors not felonies, further making my point that a felony conviction is not a minor blip on the radar screen. It's a fricking 747 crashing into the river. I wouldn't want a practicing dentist to have that in his past.

As for prison rehabilitating people, that's a pipe dream which has been disproved numerous times. It may happen once in a blue moon, but it is exceptionally rare. The sole purpose of prison is to keep people from breaking the law in public for a certain amount of time.

There are plenty of moral people with the desire to be dentists. There's no reason to grant this priviledge to those who demonstrate a propensity to abuse others.

My school warned us that if we had any felonies (I can't remember if they were all felonies or those involving a child), it is illegal to practice on children. I don't know if this is a state thing or a national thing?

Also, they made it very clear that if we did anything stupid they would find out about it. Not sure what the consequences would be, but at Iowa they expect their students to give them a good reputation. I would imagine this is true at most schools. Some schools also have a code of conduct or an honor code that could cause you to lose your spot if you do something dumb.

Dental school or not...I bet it would be pretty difficult to get or maintain a state license as a convicted felon. Dentists get sanctioned for not putting on a RD during endo...what do you think the state dental board will do about felonies?

I would have to agree that something would probably have to be illegal to get kicked out of dental school. Or maybe wear a baseball cap to class...? Some old school professors really freak out about that one.

finally a very interesting thread on SDN.

while i am positive that getting a felony could get you kicked out of the school, i am not sure if doing unethical things outside the school (going to strip clubs etc) could be grounds for your dismissal.

anyways, thanks for the heads up everyone. now i am gonna have to rethink what i am gonna spend those free times on.

oh by the way, they did make us sign something saying we would behave morally and ethically both in and outside of school.

Thanks flat4! You just made my day!

Feel free to borrow my digital camera! 😉

I know nothing about digital cameras. Can you recommend one? Thx!
Sure thing, I'm an avid photographer 🙂 but two questions:
1. what exactly are you purchasing a digital camera for? the occasional family photos (birthday, trips...) vs semi-pro (portrait, sceneries, sunrise, sunset...)
2. How much do plan on spending?

I think I'd be using the camera for a little of each. We are headed to China at the end of the year and I'd really like to capture some great shots. Can I get something decent for under $500? I really have no clue how much these things cost.

You can get an excellent camera for under $500.
Sony DSC W7
Nikon Coolpix 7900
Canon IXUS 700
Canon SD500
Those cameras are $400-500. They're all good pick. It depends on your personal preferences. I would do some researches and try them out at the stores before buying.

1. Megapixels, the higher the better, around 7MP maybe 8MP for less than $500
2. LCD screen. Larger is better!
3. Ease of Use. Scene Modes such as Portrait (blur out the surrounding, sharpen the object), Sport mode, Scenery, Snow... Some models have PAN mode. Try them out at the stores.
4. Rechargeable batteries and charger. Choose one which uses batteries. It's easier to change batteries than have to wait for it to be recharged.
5. Type of memory card

Here's a good site for comparing prices.
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_...digital%20camera/sortby=priceA/popup1=/popup1[]=90:975/

There're programs like Ulead COOL 360 which lets you combine different photos into a PAN pic. very cool. For example, you can take 4-5 pictures of The Great Wall of China, using this program you can put them together into a huge PAN pic.
Ulead CD & DVD pictureshow which lets you put hundreds of photos into a DVD slide show with your own music...Let me know if you want them.

I would highly recommend anything out of the Canon Digital Elph line. I have had an S200 for a couple years now and its great. Takes good pictures and is quite small but still has an optical zoom. Its size is about the size of a pack of cigarettes so you can easily fit it in a pocket in your jeans.

Edit: To make this more relevant to this thread I'll share a bit of info about my school. I forget the exact wording but they do state in the student handbook that students must uphold the standards of the profession both at school and in your public life. Your public life is basically anything that anyone knows about so according to this if they don't think that we need stripper-dentists then they could kick you out. I've never heard of them doing this to anyone but they do have that option.

I have the Nikon Coolpix. It was about 150 and the pictures are very clear. I am sure the avid photographer would think its crap, but it has great features! I can take little movie snippets with it! I get comments on the pics all the time and get asked what kind of camera it is.

I've got the same thing, and likewise I'm sure the photophiles would laugh it out of the room, for a simpleton like me it does a fantastic job of taking pictures. 👍
