Hello everyone!!

my life has been super crazy the past few weeks, just found out that my dad has a gambling prob, resulting in our family has absolutely NOTHING!! he took away from my sister's and my college savings, our house and everything else. total sadness, but we'll live!

i was planning on getting a masters degree before med school but i just decided to apply today and have been going crazy 😱

so far i have 2 LORs secured
my GPA including two retakes that i plan on doing in the fall is a 3.2
MCAT BS 10 PS 9 VR 9 = 28
500 hours volunteer teaching
one month of MD shadowing
400 hours volunteering at a cancer center
journalism, wrote for the cancer center news letter
head of recruitment for red cross

in all what should i be worring about? do i have a chance? im working on my personal statement tonight 🙂

i feel kinda lost, have started filling out AACOM and just need to get my transcripts sent in and my personal statement

stupid question, but how long does verification take if i turn in everything by June 18?

I would absolutely LOVE any help! thanks everyone for reading!! 😍

I applied last june and it took about 4 weeks for the applications to be verified. Get your secondaries ready because as long as you meet the minimum requirements you will get secondaries. Also i sugest to sign up for interfolio and have your LOR writers upload the letters ASAP so you can send them out right away with the secondaries. Your MCAT is good enough to make up for a slightly low gpa i think. You should hear back from a couple schools for interviews provided you have a good ps. Good luck and apply broadly to schools.

thanks everyone!

Im just having trouble hiding the fact that im applying to DO schools from my parents. 😡 they think DO = PA

gonna work on my personal statement this weekend, i feel so rushed, wish i had more time.

would i be considered a late applicant if i applied june 17? 😕

im too late for an interfolio at my school, will it put be at a big disadvanntage?

thank you everyone for your help, much appreciated!!!! 😍

Personally, I don't think I'd give a crap what my family thinks in your situation.

June 17th is very, very early. People are still applying in January!

I went to interfolio.com and registered for my own account. This service isn't offered through my school, but I see no reason you can't accomplish this independently.

Good luck. You will be successful - no doubt.

Good luck! I hope you get that acceptance for which you're looking. Applying in June isn't late by any means. The earlier the better, though.

good times! i just hope that if they do find out, its after ive submitted applications..lol

i will definately go for the indep. interfolio, my univ. has an entire interview process. sadly, im too late🙁

thanks for helping!!! 😀

i was also wondering if the 2 courses i will be RE-taking in the fall (which would bump me up to a 3.2, right now i have something like a 2.97) would the fall grades be looked at?😕

The only thing I would add, if you have the time, is some DO shadowing. Also, you may considering doing that shadowing at a primary care clinic. I found it to be an exceptionally positive experience even though I hadn't been interested in primary care before that at all. Obviously it probably won't make it into your primary app, but so long as you can get an interview you may even be able to talk about it then. Schools also usually accept supplementary materials after both the primary and secondary materials have been sent.

While the MD shadowing should be good enough for many schools, there are always the few holdouts who require a DO letter of rec. If you're applying broadly (since admissions is never guaranteed, you might as well if you can afford to do it), a DO shadowing experience and resultant LOR could be a nice little boost to your application.

not to be too rude, but if your parents (esp your dad) have an issue when they find out you're applying to DO, tell them they can shove it. you're going to make something of yourself. not that there is anything wrong with PAs, but they ought to know that you're not becoming one. DO=MD+OMM.

show them these websites:
http://osteopathic.org/index.cfm?PageID=ado_whatis (there is a pdf brochure at the bottom of the page you can print out for them to read)
http://osteopathic.org/index.cfm?PageID=ado_prominent (just a few prominent DOs in case they're interested.)
http://www.kirbydermatology.com/about.htm (he's from Dr. 90210, the tv show, in case they watch it)
and of course, no website list is complete without a wiki reference, so here it is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osteopathic_medicine_in_the_United_States
