Call me naive... but I read about Pathology on the AMCAS website and it sounds awesome! Sounds like the field is made for MSTP students, and I am expecially excited that it listed "Medical Microbiology" as a subspecialty since I am researching in Microbiology right now. Sorry, I just had to share.

Can I actually do my residency in Pathology? Anyone going this route? Any info you want to give me to burst my bubble? How many hospitals have a pathology department? Thanks! 🙂

Oh how ironic, the thread below answers a lot of my questions, where they are discussing AP/CP pathology residencies... but anything else would be helpful!

welcome to the light brutha!

there is a good FAQ sticky at the pathology forum which discusses some things in greater detail.

All of them. The smallest functioning hospital "unit" consists of a surgeon, an internist and a pathologist.

According to Andy, though, Clinical Pathology is a very risky business, since you MUST do a kick ass post-doc. I would take that into account.

Hey chattkis - great decision!! I totally agree about path being made for MSTP students. I feel like I was made to be a pathologist, and ever since I decided to be a pathologist I have been SO much happier knowing that I have such a cool residency to look forward to!

😍 path 😍

What do you guys think about sub-specializing on Chemical path? I hope there is such a thing 😕 , I read about it at the AAMC website and sounds like something that would match perfectly with my research interests. 😍

I wasn't aware that you could specialize in clinical chemistry. But since I'm doing AP only, and have ignored the whole CP issue for the most part, I can't say much.

Now when I am going to interviews for MSTP programs, do I harp on my interest in Pathology? Like can I get my PhD in Pathology? or would I just get it in one of the subspecialties like medical micro. and then do my residency in Path? Just wondering, thanks!

Keep it broad. I suggest that when interviewers ask you what field you're thinking of going into, mention a couple of fields. Include pathology on that list and relate your interest in pathology to your research interests.

I took a few graduate courses in clinical chemistry ( is the Teitz book still the "book" in this area??), which were very interesting. But CP, or should I say my work as a chemist in a CP lab, led to my completely ignoring pathology for about 7 years, lol!!!

In 2003, I went to a seminar by a Baylor pathologist, followed by my current fellowship in anatomic pathology and what can I say, it's pathology all the way for me, baby! 👍

Yeah, I am very interested in pathology too. I went to a pathology conference in DC a few years ago and just thought every single poster and presentation was interesting. I am thinking it might be best to mention path along with other fields though, if asked.

Man, I hope I at least get an interview so I can talk about it! How competetive are path residencies? I should just go check out the FAQ sticky.

Sadly my current research is in no way path related. 🙁

Pathology typically has been not very competitive and used to be seen as a "buyer's market" which means pick a place and you'll probably match there.

However, the last few years have seen a steady increase in the number of applications to pathology residency. It's hard to say if this trend will continue and for how long. By the time you apply for pathology residency 5-10 years from now, who knows how competitive it will be. It's just one of those things you'll have to look out for as you're going through medical school.
