I just finished most my prereqs for med school. Needless to say, this has been the worst year ever. In addition to things in my family, I ended up spending time in an EC that set me back drastically.

Here's the grades:

Honors calc (1,2,3): A's (it was a year of everything, with each semester being 4 hours)

Bio 1, Bio 2: A's in both

Gen Chem 1, 2: B+'s in both

Gen Chem 1 lab: A-
Gen Chem 2 lab: B

Physics 1 and 2: B+'s in both

Orgo 1: C
Orgo 1 lab: A-

Orgo 2: B
Orgo 2 lab: A-

I have yet to take Genetics and Biochem, but I will be taking those. Did I just shoot myself in the foot with these grades? I'm a Texas resident highly interested in schools at the level of Baylor College of Medicine. However as of right now, my GPA is somewhere like a 3.65-3.67, and the only places where I don't have A's are in my science classes.

It's not that I'm simply unable to understand the concepts in these subjects. I've legitimately always done so many things that I have had less time to spend on the classes that take more time. More often then not, these are science classes. I just finished my sophomore year but I've been involved in 3 research labs already, was accepted to SURF in the one I'm at right now, have 100+ hours of volunteering, 30 hours of shadowing, and won some major awards in competitions and will be an officer in a prehealth club next semester. And then there were things that happened this year like changing my major, a family incident, etc.

Am I doomed for schools at the range of Baylor? (avg. GPA: 3.8, MCAT 33). My sGPA right now is probably somewhere like a 3.3-3.45 I don't wish to go the DO route as of yet.

If you can get a good MCAT score (35+), your chances for UTSW/BCM are still competitive. You say that your low grades in prereq classes aren't because you're unable to answer the concepts - so prove it by doing well on the MCAT.
With a 30+ you'd be competitive at every other Texas school. There's a pretty big gap between BCM and TCOM 🙄

You still have junior year to pull up your sGPA, and you haven't taken your MCAT.
Yeah, raising your GPA isn't going to be a cakewalk, but it's not over until the fat lady sings.
Good luck, and go coogs! 😉
P.S. I got interviewed at BCM with a 3.65. You'll be fine. I think 35+ is a little overkill, honestly, 32+ (with your research experience) should be competitive enough.

anyone else have any suggestions?

I would say: don't get too caught up in getting into baylor specifically. You may have 4.0, 35 mcat, have ECs and research get interviewed and still not get in 🙁

I see. What about other schools in similar stats of BCM?

I see u r in Texas so that would be utsw. In fact, u can get interviewed at both schools (and they both have acceptance rate of around 45% once u are interviewed), and still not get in (my situation lol)

Hahaha, I'm sorry man 🙁

I'm guessing schools like UT-H are still in the league for me then?

You still have tons of time, just keep gpa above 3.7 and ace the mcat. In my experiences, numbers will get you some interviews but interviews and LOR are important to seal acceptances.

Yeah you're right.

I think in my case I'm worried about not being able to make A's in my science classes

Your ECs seem pretty good, particularly the research experience. You're going to need to do well on your MCAT. During the second semester of my junior year, I cut out a lot of extra activities to focus on class and the MCAT. This strategy really worked well for me. Think about it: it's only four months. Buckle down and get it done, and then have an awesome senior year!

Also, there really wasn't a single school in Texas that I didn't like. They're all good! You'll realize this too when you start interviewing. Wherever you go, be that BCM or not, you'll get a quality education with invaluable opportunities at any of the TX schools.
