I just finished taking the DAT a couple of hours ago and I can't get over my awful scores....

AA 16
Bio 17
Gen Chem 15
Orgo 17
RC 17
QR 15
PAT 15

I know I am going to have to retake the exam...but now I have to wait until Nov 1st (90 days) which is entirely too late. I am so disheartened. I studied really hard....and felt like I knew so much...I didn't feel that the exam was representative of all the Bio, Chem, and Orgo I know. Time was a huge problem for me, but then again, it has always been. I am not a bad student... my overall GPA: 3.8, and SciGPA: 3.6...I am just a bad test taker (I just never knew this bad).
I took the Kaplan course, went through examkrakers for each of the sciences and even purchased topscore. I have only ever wanted to be a dentist and now my dreams seem to be coming to a crashing halt. No school is going to want me...I wouldn't even want me. Any words of encouragement?🙁

I understand how you feel because I'm in the same boat with you. I just took DAt 3 days ago, and I got terrible score. My GPA is around yours as well. Don't worry too much. Yeah. It's sad, but I've realized that it's not the end of the world. I think with your GPA, u will definitely get in some day. Now, just forget everything, and relax. We are deserve that.

Id say change how you study and take some timed tests. Going through problems with an unlimited amount of time aint going to help you. Put yourself in the pressure situation or youll never get used to it. And everyone does have 3 shots on the DAT. Let the schools that you applied to know you plan on retaking it and then just do better.

Get DAT Destroyer! If you are in the NY area go to Dr. Romano's classes. This will boost you a few points easily. Keep studying and good luck.

Well hey, now you know EXACTLY how to study for the test..you just took it!! (granted the questions arent gonna be the same) You can change your study habits and raise your test scores by many points the next time you take it!

I've heard of these classes he teaches. When are the next ones? Is there a site with dates/etc?

Futuredentist, you didn't take my advice! Just kidding. No, I had no idea yesturday that you were going to take the exam TODAY!!! What the heck! I feel for you man. You did better then me on the QR so you should at least feel good about that. Look, if you really do WANT to be a dentist, than you have to (by virtue of this seemingly predestined desire to be a dentist) not get discouraged. Look on the bright side, you have an excellent GPA/sGPA and now all you have to worry about is retaking the exam! Lots of people, including myself, do not have as high a GPA as you so you should be greatful. I know tons of people that have to retake the DAT, and likewise, I know that as a dentist you will face many times of discouragement. You should view your life as a whole not a part. This one set back is a mere part of your life and does not (and should not) detract you from your destiny if your heart is set on being a dentist. Keep fighting, start studying now while you have all of this knowledge that you've acquired while studying for the first DAT you took today. Bust your guts trying to study for your next exam. You'll find that the more you study the greater confidence you'll achieve. If you do this then you will get to the point where you will be ANXIOUS to retake because you KNOW that you'll ROCK THE EXAM. Good luck and keep your chin up!!

This is all great advice. Don't give up.

Hey guys...I want to thank everybody sooooo much for their advice...denticus, thefifthbeatle,Ething,ecuajedi,THDenta... I am going to continue to study really hard, order the Destroyer, and lighten my fall semester load (even if I have to sacrifice my Chem and/or French minor) so that I can have more time to study. A few hours ago, I was pretty depressed, but reading all of your posts has reminded me that a low....and I mean really low DAT score is not going to hold me back and stop me from realizing my lifelong dream. I will conquer the DAT....grrrrrrr......I am ready for the fight...and will WIN!!!! ....just one quick question...how can I let the schools that I applied to know that I am planning on retaking the exam?...should I call/e-mail/do it through aadsas? Thanks guys again...my frown has now turned upside down thanks to you all 🙂

Hey,

definitely don't give up hope for sure. With you gpa, you definitely have potential to kill it next time. I think you could just call the schools to let them know you are taking it but i'm not sure about this. Someone else might be able to guide you better on that question.

One question I had was, what were you getting on your practice scores and how long did you study for? Were the questions much harder than topscore and stuff?

You will definitely do better next time since you aren't giving up 🙂

Future...

I took the DAT yesterday and came out with the same scores as you pretty much. It sucked to spend over 4 hours on that thing only to get slapped in the face on the final screen!

Tomorrow I start calling around to dental schools to see if it is even worth retaking this year, or just reapplying next year...we shall see....let me know what you decide to do...as I am still contemplating taking it in 90 days.

Good luck to you and never give up!
