Hello SDN. Thanks in advance for your help

Washington State Resident
Attending top 35 undergrad in New York state
Biochemistry BS Cumulative GPA 3.61 BCPM GPA 3.74
Sort of a weird GPA trend. Obviously there is more to the story but a quick synopsis: I came into college as an engineering major and became disinterested with my coursework during my sophomore year. Upon my decision to pursue a career in medicine, I was rejuvenated and excelled.
GPA JR Year 3.95 (4.0 2nd semester including biochem & physics II)
GPA SO Year 3.31
GPA FR Year 3.51

MCAT 6/21/12 : 35M 13PS 11VR 11BS

Submitted application 6/28 and expect to be verified early next week.

Teaching Experience:
1 Year of Math TA (Calculus II & Linear Algebra)
1 Year of Orgo TA
Biochemistry TA upcoming fall semester (not listed on app)

Research Experience:
Organic Chemistry Lab from May 2011- Present (40+ hrs/week summer, 15 hrs/week during school)
REU program NSF funded
Couple poster presentations
2nd author of publication in journal of organic chemistry
Currently "guiding" 3 younger undergrads on a new medicinal chemistry project that is absolutely fascinating. Will continue on with this paid project into my senior year.

Clinical Experience:
~60 hours shadowing orthopedic surgeon over summer and winter breaks. Most of observation was in office, with about 10 hours in OR
~15 hours shadowing internist
~5 hours shadowing in OR at local hospital
3 hrs/week volunteering during Fall12 semester (15 weeks) as a child life specialist in PICU. Took spring semester off due to course load and MCAT studying and have since resumed at 3 hrs/wk since early June.

Employment:
Have worked part time during the school year and full time in the summers since I was 15 at a Lumber yard/ construction (age 15-18), host and bus boy (18-19), and pharmaceutical technician (19-current)
Work in pharmacy 8-12 hrs/wk during the last year and a half. I've loved the experience and can definitely relate parts of it to what I aspire to do (can also easily explain why medicine and not pharmacy)

High school stuff that usually isn't relevant but I think it may be in this instance:
I participated in a program called running start in HS. I took ALL of my classes at a community college during my JR and SR year (and I have to submit these grades) and earned by AA degree before graduating HS. I'm particularly proud of this achievement because I financially supported myself through the program while continuing to participate in ECs (student government, varsity sports, all those shenanigans).

Fraternal Involvement:
Member of fraternity since sophomore fall.
Held the positions of philanthropy chairman & standards chairman (executive board)
Many hours of nonclinical volunteering

Other:
1 year of NCAA football (freshman year)
NSCS (of all the jargon I've written this may be the most irrelevant)
Multiple Deans List
Merit based scholarships

Not sure if I left anything else out.

School list:
Albany Medical College
Albert Einstein
Boston University
Case Western
Drexel
Harvard
Jefferson
John Hopkins
University of Pennsylvania
Rosalind Franklin
Rush Medical College
Stanford
SUNY Buffalo
SUNY Upstate
Temple
The Commonwealth Medical College
Tufts
University of Rochester
University of Washington

Thoughts on this list (additions welcome!) and any advice is welcome.
Thank you for reading and I hope it wasn't too much of a bore

I was thinking about adding Cornell... I'll definitely look into NYU as well.
Anywhere else? I know I have some pretty unrealistic reach schools (HMS, stanford, JHop) but I regretted not doing so with undergraduate universities.
Thank you for your input.

Northwestern, Loyola, U Chicago, Columbia, Mt. Sinai, Wash U?

I think it looks good! Why not apply to some reach? Your numbers and ECs are good. Now it's just up to whatever these schools happen to be looking for at the moment. Best of luck!

Very nice stats...I guess it will take some luck. Those schools seem like a great list.

I'm a physician who started out in an allopathic school and then transferred to an osteopathic school for personal reasons (involved a girl!). You're very competitive, no doubts about it. Just remember that all it takes is for one jerk to be having a bad day d/t a marital dispute (or whatever) to sink any particular interview. The way that you beat this is by applying to a minimum of 10 schools -- for less-competitive folks that should probably be more like 30 if you can afford it. It sounds like you've done your homework based on how much you've shadowed, which is important b/c discovering that you don't want to be a physician anymore once you're 200K is debt really sucks. I also know this from experience as I'm currently a freelance author (Army experiences put me off of medicine; that's a story for another day).

Leonardo Noto

Hey, dude above me, is your avatar testosterone? I'm just pulling that from memory and it's probably wrong, but if it is 'test' that's really funny. Remember to get a loose fitting suit for your interview-- EDIT: Oh, I just read that your name is nandrolone. Yeah, definitely a loose fitting suit !!! 😎

Thanks for all the input guys I really appreciate it!
