So I called up Dr. Joynt and said how they've told me I'm a competitive applicant and yet I've been on hold for months. He said that they're up to their ears in files. He then asked where I go to school (UofT - closeby) and told me to come in on Friday at 2:30 to have a chat about my application with him. He took my name and contact info.

Should I treat this as an interview (ie have my game face on, dressed in a suit, show some cleavage 😛 )?

I think I'm going to treat this as my last chance to convince him to offer me an interview!

I guess this is better than nothing and I get to sit down and talk with the big man.

I'm going to really show him that I'm not just another Canadian using Buffalo as a backup school and that I know a lot about how great their program is and how dedicated I am to spending 4 years at Buffalo. I've been told by someone 😉 that this might be the key for Canadians with competitive stats because they tend to bail on Buffalo on the last second when they get into a Canadian school.

Any advice would be great from people who have interviewed at Buffalo. Also, what can you guys tell me about Dr. Joynt. He seems really professional yet he also seems like he can take a few jokes and dish it out too 😀

Thanks

You seem to be all over the place, and I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing. If you got into Buffalo would you seriously consider attending that school over Penn? If not, why even bother? You advertise as if you are set on Penn already but yet you fret over your Harvard interview, and now this "semi-interview" at Buffalo? Are you that undecided or is Buffalo a serious consideration over Penn?

I think Audio has said plenty that Buffalo is his top choice of the US schools. If that’s really true then get your game face on and go in there “cocked locked and ready to rock”. Good luck man!

Thanks Gargamel!

You're right, I've said it more than a few times that I'd pick Buffalo over any school in the US...even Harvard. It just makes sense for me.

I honestly don't care about Ivy this or that, although I do think that Penn and Harvard have great programs. One thing I will say about Penn is that it's just sooooo expensive. Who would have ever thought that I'd be hoping to get into Harvard because it would be a cheap option 😱 😀 hahahahha

This whole process is crazy. I remember reading about the process from students who were going through it last year. I didn't understand what they meant. Your emotions are all over the place. You guys have no idea how many time I've fallen in and out of love with the city of Philadelphia hahhahah

obviously treat it as an interview (whether it is one or not). the big guy (literally) is really nice so don't get too stressed over it. you definitely deserve to go there and i hope you get in! :luck:

If you got an interview in Harvard, then Im sure your stats are good enough for Buffalo. Dr. Joynt seemed to be a nice guy... but I wouldnt get too relaxed because if you let your guard down, he will continue to read you. I would definitely put on a suit since this may actually be your interview... you would just be missing out on the tour. Also, there are schools in which the dean of admissions can override any adcom decision... if he stamps you in... you are done... good luck....

Congrats buddy. This is great news! You've been very consistent about wanting to go to buffalo so im sure it will work out for you. Ive told you before and ill say it again, I hope you get in. Good luck. Dr. Joint is a great guy, there is nothing to worry about. I was interviewed by Dr. Davis and Dr. Cho. But i had the chance to meet Dr. joynt and you are in for a real treat!

Thanks for the support guys.

Just a quick question. Do you guys actually think that Dr. Joynt could offer me a spot at Buffalo based on this "appointment". I mean, let's say I impress him and he finds out everything he needs to know about me on Friday. Would it be possible for him to say that a "formal" interview is not needed and then present my file to the adcom for a final review? I guess that might be hoping for too much but I would be so happy if it even ended up in a "formal" interview in a couple of weeks.

Also, I've decided to treat this like a full out interview. I guess I'd better prepare an answer to "What is professionalism?" 😀

Congrats audio. I don't have any anecdotes about Dr. Joynt, since I haven't been exposed to him too much outside of the whole admissions process. He occasionally teachs in our pre-clinical courses, but I haven't had interactions with him.

You definitely need to convince him that if Buffalo offered you a spot, you would take it. That is his number one concern. He'll be asking himself "If I offer this Maple Leaf fan an acceptance, willl he take it"? You could mention your ties in Toronto and how Buffalo is the geographically closest American school to you. You could mention/exagerrate that you have lots of friends at UB undergrad and that you have lots of ties to here. If you didn't apply to any Canadian schools, you should tell him that. You could say that you want to practice in the states and thus want a DDS from an American university. These are just some ideas. Make sure you firmly communicate this to him, but in a non-desperate and professional manner. Good luck.

How did your meeting go? Did he offer you anything?

Audio are you still alive?

Audiooooooooo? Oh Audiooooooo? U THERE?

Maybe Audio was accepted to Buffalo, and he decided to move on with his life 🙁

Audio is too shallow to miss the opportunity to rub his acceptance in my face. If he goes to Buffalo, I'll have to get me a new 'subject' for my S&M 'research.' :meanie: 😎 😎

I am thinkin Audio read way too much into the meeting and it turned out to be nothin more than a tour at the school! Maybe a free lunch if he's lucky.

Hey guys,

Sorry for not posting recently. Just had to deal with the worst few days in my life. Ended a 3 year relationship with the girl I was supposed to marry. Hurts so damn bad but I guess life has to go on. One thing is for sure, I won't think about a relationship until I'm ready to get married in about 5 years. I can't invest that much into something and have it end just like that.

Anyways, on to the interesting stuff 🙄 Buffalo. Basically the whole point of the meeting was to prove to Dr. Joynt that Buffalo is not my back up. He told me that Canadians with higher stats in the past just either bail on their spot during orientation when they get into a Canadian school off the waitlist, or they try to leave after 1st year to a Canadian school. He made it seem like if my stats were lower, I would have had a better chance at getting in.

I did my best to convince him that Buffalo is my #1 choice in the States and probably my # 2 overall (I couldn't give up UofT) - I didn't tell him this but he would probably figure it out.

This doesn't seem fair. WHy do i have to prove that Buffalo is my #1 to get an interview? I'm sure Buffalo wasn't everyone's #1. Do they question Californians about their desire to attend Buffalo because it's so far from home? Even if they question them, at least they give them an interview so they can plead their case.

Anyways, enough of a rant for me!

My impressions of Buffalo...surroundings were kind of boring but the school and campus rock! Students were really nice and seemed happy. Seems like a really nice place. And so damn close to home. I'd drive home every weekend. I mean, an hour and a half...can't really beat that!

We'll see if it was worth it. I'm just waiting for them to update their site and see if I scored myself an interview. If I don't get one on this update, I guess I'll just lick my wounds and move on. Not bitter though, great school! Congrats to all that got in!

Oh yeah, just so people know, Dr. Joynt told me that they've filled 63 of the 85 or so spots so 20 are still up for grabs. He also said that come April, more will open up and also that every year, even up to the first week of classes, spots open up.

My final feeling on Buffalo, I'll get an interview/acceptance but late in the game. I feel like they'll let me know once I've already solidified my plans at another school 🙁
