Hi everyone,
I've known for awhile that I want to go into women's health. I specifically want to just do gynecology though, I'm really not that interested in the OB part, I just don't care much for babies I guess, ha. The sexual health and fertility aspect of women's health is what I'm most passionate about. I'm wondering if it is possible to go that route, or if there are any specific gyn residencies. I always see the two paired together, is that just how it is? thanks!

There aren't. All residencies are OB and GYN. There have been rumors that they'll try to make different residency tracks where you would do either general OB/gyn, focus on OB, or focus on GYN, but that hasn't happened yet.

If you're not interested in the surgical part of women's health, there are Women's Health tracks through internal medicine and family medicine. I don't know if that would appeal to your interests, though.

thanks so much for this info. yeah I am actually interested in the surgical aspect of gynecology, and I like the idea of doing procedures. I suppose it's possible after residency to just focus more on gynecology and fertility. also doing both in residency would set me up nicely to go either way. thanks again!

Have you considered uro-gynecology? I know several uro-gyne's who's practice is solely focused on gynecological surgery.

During my 3rd year rotation in OB/GYN this is what I was told (by the staff docs): it is relatively common to transition one's career to GYN-only after initial practice in OB/GYN en toto. This is regardless of whether one was fellowship trained (Urogyn, Gyn-Onc being two of the most common GYN-only subspecialties). But the initial comprehensive practice of OB/GYN was necessary prior to going GYN only for the sake of building up a practice to the point where it was sustainable on GYN only. The biggest reason people went into GYN-only practice was for a better lifestyle (no midnight calls for deliveries) and to drop the OB malpractice issues.

awesome, thanks for this info, that's exactly what I was trying to find out.
