How do you shake that horrible feeling when you get an exam grade back and you literally just passed? We had an organic 2 exam and I learned I literally just passed (i.e. a low 70) and I feel so defeated. I got a super high B on my first exam and I really felt like I knew the material for this exam, so much so that I believe the professor may have made an error.

Damn you organic chemistry 👎

Just review what you got wrong, figure out why you didn't do well, and move on.

Here's how you shake it: put the past behind you, stop blaming others, double down your efforts, and make success happen for yourself.

Someday you're gonna get a diagnosis wrong and a patient will suffer, it is inevitable. How will you handle that? By blaming the patient for misrepresenting their symptoms? By getting down on yourself? No, you admit your mistake and move forward with a solution in order to bring about a better outcome.

Disclaimer: I got a 39% with the curve (yes, WITH the curve) on my first orgo 2 exam. I feel you man. You'll be ok, just stay positive.

Organic chemistry is not as hard as many students make it out to be (especially at the sophomore level). This exam gave you a realistic benchmark of where your knowledge base is for the block. This means you can improve and it's not too late. With ochem a method I used was reading (Leroy Wade's Organic Chemistry) and back of the chapter practice problems, videos (YouTube), random practice exams online (many schools have banks of ochem questions- pick one, time yourself and then grade yourself with the answer key). Google concepts you don't get and use your institution's learning center.

So overall, ochem can suck (especially if you take a 400/500 level synthetic ochem class🙂 ), but it's not a difficult enough class to just "pass" at the sophomore level, especially if you tackle the class with a plan to succeed. Good luck!

Remind yourself that in a few weeks/months/years, you won't even remember what you got on that exam, because that's how little it matters in the scheme of things.

It happens, and is not an indication that you're not doing well if all of your other test scores indicate otherwise. If you were consistently scoring low, that would be one thing, but you did well on the first one, and can continue to do well. I was scoring an avg of a low A on my ochem exams, save one... which was a pleasant 67. I did shudder inside, naturally reviewed the test for grading errors, and when there were none, I moved on. It didn't kill my final grade, and you don't have to let it tank yours, either. (Is lab built in with your test grades?)

I got a D on the first organic test I ever took, I just figured out what I was doing wrong and then did it right the next time. Don't let it bother you, it's so not worth worrying about.

I've always felt that many students hear horror stories about Ochem being this GPA-killing-monster and psych themselves out as a result.

Almost nothing from orgo carries over into med school material, it's literally just a weed-out class. If you get a C or higher in it, and you get A's in your other science classes you'll be fine (unless you're gunning for a top school).

If it makes you feel any better, one time I completely forgot about a Spanish exam I had. Let's just say I didn't get a passing grade on that bad boy. Poor performances happen to everyone at least once, just gotta shake it off and figure out what when wrong. For me, it was not writing down that I had a midterm :inpain:

Another "if it makes you feel any better":

In orgo 2 I pulled a 48 on a midterm once.... Came to find out the cutoff for a C (!!!!) was a 35... Needless to say I ended up fine in the class overall. Just learn from your mistakes and try and do better next time

I got something like a 52 on one of my exams in my final semester. Scared the crap out of me, but I just focused and aced every other exam. Managed to still get an A- in the course.

I got a 28% on an ochem 2 midterm and got a C+ in the class but managed to pull my sGPA up to a 3.6 upon graduating. I still got interviews at MD schools so it's not the end of the world; just make sure to ace the rest of your classes!

From what I remember from my orgo class, a 70 was above average?

I'm just hoping my professor does curve in the end. I know I'm doing better than average and a curve would be a great thing but another student told me that the professor didn't curve in organic 1. We have 2 more exams and a final so I should be fine but I'm to the point were I hate organic chemistry (and it doesn't help that the professor is rude and unapproachable).
