Hey guys! I'm 19, a college freshman, and my goals are set for med school but I have a fear I'm already ineligible. Reason is, I was dropped from my university after the first semester of my freshman year (still freshman) for having too low of a GPA. I wasn't able to get housing, and having to commute on top of being on the track team effected my studying. I was told being dropped from a university is an automatic rejection from med school no matter what, regardless of future grades and MCAT score. Is this true?

I'm currently in community college with around a 3.8 gpa and plan to transfer back to my university or another within a semester or two.

Being it was so early on, if I get great grades now and score good on the MCATs do I still have a chance or I'm I out since I was dropped?
I'm dying to know because if I'm out I need to plan a different route.
Thanks

There aren't any automatic outs for med school apps regarding GPA and stuff.

Just do well and get back on track, which it seems you're on your way. You are very early in your path, so you have plenty of time to fix it.

Do the best you can moving forward.

well no, im just concerned that since I was dropped that one time that it is an automatic drop when I apply to med school. I'm not worried about gpa, I know I can get it high enough now.
I just want to double check bc I planned to volunteer at a hospital this summer to get some experience on how it is and to help my chances when applying.

Thanks!

you are fine there is no auto out and luckily you have only one bad semester of grades. I had a similar situation. 1st semester got a 2Ds and 2Cs dropped out. Restarted at a CC transferred and now im in med school. The only bad thing is you literally have zero room for error but if you can keep it up, you will be fine. Your GPa should at least be around 3.5 if you do well including those bad grades (which i assume is a few Fs or Ds). Dont give up hope🙂

Sorry man... But hey I hear the Caribbean is nice.

Thanks! I was told by one student who is apparently in med school that it is a drop but I never heard that so I wanted to make sure.
haha, grades were fine but 2 of the classes were pass fail so they didnt matter if I got a C or an A. The 2 that did count were a C and an F so that was what screwed me. Basically that I only had a gpa of two classes.

Thanks for the replies guys!

actually i should say there are auto outs, but they are more along the lines of criminal offenses and such not doing poorly. So basically, you have a 2 bad grades its not going to makea huge diff. Will it look poorly that you were dropped? of course it will but if you manage a high mcat (32+) and 4 years of 3.7+ (which it looks like you are) then theres less of an issue. Its something you will have to explain and write about in both your personal statement as well as 2ndaries and even interviews. But if you manage 4 years of success its very easy to use the old "i was immature, didnt do well, but turned my life around and got to work." And you will have 4 years of solid grades, mcat, research, and volunteering to back that claim up. Dont listen to people who say you are screwed, if you are worried you can always speak to prospective schools and ask them their opinion when you get closer to applying time.

How the hell can you consider yourself out when you're ONLY A FRESHMAN in college? Unless you completely blow with Fs in everything you are NEVER out of it. There are many ways to make up whatever deficiencies you may have. Defitist attitudes will be the first thing to take you out of the running.

There are few things that would be an automatic out.. this is not one of them. Do everything right from here on out and you'll have a nice little story for your personal statement about doing whatever it took to fulfill your dream of going to medical school or something sappy like that.
