i know it is late but i did it just today!
So my GPA is trash a 2.67 (b-)
My DAT wasnt too bad, a 19AA, 19 PAT
Got everything in this week, and now my app is complete.

So what are my chances this cycle? Also im in my 4th year of study, so my GPA iam expecting to go up to about 2.80.

Should i re write my DAT? Chances this cycle?
i know im late....im from Detroit (wayne state uni)

No chance. Maybe a chance if u are urm.

Not great..sorry to be blunt, but that GPA is the hole in your application. DAT scores aren't bad, but you need a high GPA to offset you average DAT score. The combination of very low GPA/avg. DAT/later application will hurt you. Sorry....

Really sorry to be another downer but you might need a 21+ to offset your gpa. It is really late in the cycle this this year but if you retook your gpa and got at least a 21 and applied 1st/2nd batch next cycle I think you would have a great chance despite your gpa. Just watch out for some schools that have gpa cut-offs at 3.0.
Good Luck

Your looking at least 2 years of course work remediation of all A's. Post-Bac first and then Masters to follow. Because your canadian, getting into dental school is going to be even harder for you. So sorry to be blunt, suprised you havent done reasearch. 3.5 gpa / 19 AA is the average accepted stats for US citizeins. GL

Don't get down on yourself...be realistic and pro-active...Im telling you don't expect anything or its gonna be really depressing, alot of us have went through it, and are speaking from past experience. Start making plans and networking for Masters programs, because even getting into one of those is gonna be difficult, study as much as you can, there is nothing more important to get as many A's as you can from here on out! GL!

Ya i understand. Thanks. I know i stand no chance afftter reading previous threads with similar stats

You should take extra classes and raise your GPA,( calculate Cumulative GPA and science GPA separately) Your DAT scores are average, you can either stay with same scores ( expires in 2-3 years) or retake when you are ready to apply with a new GPA, at least >than 3.0. GoOd luck from someone that I applied with Science GPA 2.95, cumulative GPA 3.3 and a 14DAT lol, I didn't know what I was doing :scared: lol, and i actually thought i will get interviews..lol SDNerds do not allow DS to curve the scores lol ( no offense to SDNerds) lol

Hey, there!

I'm sorry if we have all gotten you down. However, we're all young adults at this point in life, and it's time to start being realistic.

With your scores and GPA, you have an extremely slim chance of getting into dental school right now. That, however, isn't to say that you could not potentially turn this around. It will take lots of hard work, though, and you need to think about how much you really want this. To get your GPA above a 3.0, it may take a few years' worth of classes with As in everything. Also, since your GPA will be on the lower end even if you raise it, I would highly suggest that you retake the DAT. I'm thinking you'd need a 22+, honestly. Also, make sure you work on getting in some great ECs and shadowing experience.

So, if you really want this, you have your work cut out for you. If this is your dream, though, I'm sure you can make it happen. Best of luck to you!

I just hope by next cycle, my 3.60 gpa in 4th year (my goal) which will bring my gpa up to a 2.80ish might land me an interview for fall 2014. In the year before that ill apply for a masters. Not sure what to do if i STILL dont get in after that point....

I must have missed some memo, since everyone seems to think you're Canadian...since Detroit is, in fact, in Michigan. Maybe I missed something, very possible.

But back on topic, your chances are slim, but do NOT give up. As others have said, if you want this bad enough, you will get there. It will take lots of work, but it's not out of the question yet. Right your ship, bail out some of the water, and push ahead. (Sorry, reading a nautical book, got me thinking all screwy =))

Don't give up!!! University of South Florida has an excellent Masters in Medical Sciences program that can be done completely online or in person.

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe because he "wrote" his DAT? Isn't that what the Canadians say?

That's definitely not an American colloquialism. Maybe it was intentional. I don't want to be accusatory with so little information but OP could be a Canadian imposter posing as an American in order to troll. I'm probably wrong since the post doesn't seem inflammatory but I think it's funny if the OP were a troll and you just foiled his/her trolling plans. Ha!

I think a post-bacc or Master's program is in order. Possibly with a DAT retake.

haha no iam canadian but i go to wayne state so i live in the states. im not sure whether to do a informal post bacc and bring my gpa to a 3.0, or a special masters and get a say 3.6 in that, but ill still have a 2.80ish (after 4th year) undergrad GPA....

If I were you I would stay in undergrad until you get your gpa past a 3.0, double major or take a bunch of other upper level bios maybe and then hop right into a masters...My state school told me they like to see no post-bacc work but that's only one school

It's not the end of the world, yet.🙂

just got a rejection from NOVA! The rest are gonna come flying in...

Not true! Nova has rejected a lot of people with great stats so chin up! Just because they didn't see something in your application doesn't mean that other schools won't. You have already applied so do not dwell on rejections, only hope for interviews! I'm rooting for you 😀

^Thanks!!
I hope so too! But seeing people with 3.0s getting rejected ii dont think i have a chance!
I hope BU, NYU, or UDM dont reject me, or im really done!!! I dont think i have a chance even there, do i? lol

Hm well NYU's avg. GPA's are only 3.3/3.4 So you may have a shot there. I got an interview there a couple weeks back. From what I hear, UDM is a new school so anythings possible and I personally didn't apply to BU because I took physics at CC.
Just remember anythings possible 🙂

umm...UDM dental school has been around since the 1930's so i wouldnt really consider that a new school lol

Just my personal opinion.
I was one of the people who preferred the postbac over masters program, until I got my gpa verified. I noticed the postbac column for GPA is gone. So I think it will be easier for ADCOMs to notice an drastic increase of GPA (the case you do well in the program) in the graduate GPA column and observe the upper trend without further analyzing the application. With so many applications to be reviewed, a 4.0 in a separate column will be more noticeable.
just my opinion. .

Ya its a hard choice. I just hope i get an interview, but i dont think even BU will send me an invite, yet alone the other schools! 🙁

+1. My two cents:

Don't give up. Schools don't mind so much if you've had a couple tough semesters (we all have), as long as you show the determination and willingness to improve your grades/scores towards the end. In short, they want to see a positive trend. I recommend staying around to finish your B.S. with hopefully around a 3.0, then apply to one of those non-thesis 1yr M.S. programs and rock it out. If you can get As or mostly As in the program you should be much better off. Retake the DAT if you have the time (before or after program). Right now, just focus on improving your grades. Then the DAT will follow if necessary.

Rejected from UCSF
🙁
no chance? hope is zzero now lmao

You should be focusing your energy on what to do next year, don't waste much rtime on this year's application cycle. Also, no offense, but your goal of 3.6 isn't high enough. With your GPA you really need to bust out closer to a 4.0 to prove to schools you can handle their curriculum.

i know, i just come here to burn some steam.
i come on my breaks, and see whwat people are saying.
And asking for advice.

So im rewriting the DAT, im writing the candian one in november (registered in septmeber). i was wondering if you guys know if it is harder than the american one? excluding the soap carving.
Also, if i do worse on the canadian one, will that be considered my lastest DAT even tho it is the canadian one? Do most schools look at highest? or avg? or recent DAT?

Thanks for ur advice!

If I were you, I'd study full time and hardcore and aim for 21+ on every section. Not sure about Canadian DATs but your chances aren't looking so good. If I were you, I'd keep taking post-bac classes until next summer, enroll in a 1 year nonthesis masters for a year and apply the following year when you have new DAT, better set of GPAs.

Masters can only really benefit you if you're hovering around a 2.9 undergrad GPA and then go for a 3.8+ masters GPA. And being a Canadian applicant, I'd say you need a 3.2 undergrad GPA plus a 3.8+ masters GPA and 21+ to have a decent shot at landing a few interviews. Landing 1 interview marginally is too risky.

I am aiming high thanks for the advice.
so i shoudnlt do a masters (non thesis) if i have a 2.80GPA?

Bump it up to a 3.2 or something. And then do masters just to be more certain. But that's just me, and I'm neurotic like that.

thanks (kitty)^2 🙂

So does everyone else think the same thing, has anyone here had a low GPA got rejcected? And did a smp and still didnt get in?!

Also, do schools care about the courses we take, for instance do they care if i dropped out of a 400 level molecular class to a 300 level environmental physiology course?
Also, as another canadian asked, does lab volunteering help, not research just bi**** work?

I wanna make myself more competitive thats why i ask. Thanks

Lab work... volunteer... none of that matters for you.

IMO, you should drop all of that and focus 100% on school work to pump out that 4.0 for this semester and next semester. Everything else can take a back seat (car, gf, dog, homeless shelter, soup kitchen, finding the cure for aids).

Dental schools prefer to see good gpas because it is reassuring to them that you can handle their curriculum. They don't want to admit someone that'll drop out after the first exam. With the amount that I'm studying now, I should've had a 5.0 GPA back in undergrad 🙂

SO i should quit being a member of a frat, hospital volunteering, shadowing dentist, and lab bitch work? Or keep 1 of them, which one is best?
Ok i know this cycle i have no chance, but im still hoping BU might send me an interview....
Any advice on if its better to get an A in a 300 level environmental physiology course OR a B+ in a 400 level molecular cell biology class? hypothetically speaking.

thanks.

You should aim to get As in all your classes, and take 400 level ones. Def quit the frat, maybe the lab too. You probably logged many hours of that already and it sounds like its not going anywhere. How many volunteering/shadowing hours do you have? A good goal is 100 hours of shadowing.

Ya i did alotttt of hours in shaodwing, 2 dentists actually (over 500hrs). And i go to the hospital and lab weekly, 2 hours a week in lab, and 4 hours a week in hospital. How helpful is this tho!?
Ya i took the 300 level course cuz its easier to get an A in. But do they care that is not molecular/cell/biochem?
So i just drop out of lab bitch work and frat and enuf shaodwing?

Not trying to be a troll, but I keep seeing this thread and thinking....Why did you say 'just wrote' my DAT? Do you mean that as you just took it? Or that maybe you just sent a letter with it? Is that a northern/possibly Canadian saying?

it seems like canadians prefer to use the word "wrote" instead of "took"

You should quit everything. Try as hard as you can to get a 4.0 next semester. Once you're comfortable getting A's then you can resume some of the important ECs like shadowing and research. But even if you can't fit those into your schedule it's ok, your grades are more important right now.

Ya i agree. I wanna drop them, or atleast cut them down.
Has anyone on this forum had to apply 2+ times, just because of GPA?! Im defenitly working hard to get As, but i want someone with experince who applied more than once and had a similar gpa to start of with.
Or if anyone knows of someone in a similar case.
I appreciate all ur help. thanks

Isn't it weird how neither of them makes any more sense than the other? You obviously didn't write the test because you're the student who is being examined and you're not the testmaker. It becomes ambiguous when testmakers say they "wrote the test" when they're implying they either designed the test or was examined by the test.
Also in American English you don't physically possess the test when you "take the test". You give it back to the tester. Etymology studies would be interesting, at least to me.

OP either needs to learn new study skills or learn to manage time better because the current efforts obviously aren't working. Maybe both.

I think it's both, with no disrespect to him in anyway at all. Being efficient and on top of the game is very important. I drove myself nuts doing my accelerated masters full time whilst working 20-30 hours a week in a dental office, but ended up with the best grades I've ever had. 'Twas a true testament to one's character.

justwrote - you keep on asking the same question over and over and over again. Are you looking for people to validate you or are you actually taking our advice? I'm not entirely sure, cause I feel like no one's advice is really getting into your head. It seems like you're just looking for that one person with a 2.5 or a 2.6 who applied and got in as a Canadian to validate your current status as an applicant. You're really beating a dead horse at this point. Your chance is not slim, it's non-existent. Either way, I think I've left you with what I think in this thread.

Good luck

Thanks for your help, no im not trying to sound like an idiot, but i wouldve liked to hear about someone with a similar GPA get in, not that it matters.

My other main objective was how iportant are ECs, specifically, Lab work, frat, and hosptial vunteering.

But i get it, thanks.

ECs are important, but their importance pales in comparison to grades. ECs are what distinguish you from people with similar stats/scores. If your stats/scores do not compare, the committee won't even look at your ECs. Your application won't even make it past the preliminary review.

Well Tufts rejected me.....They emailed me saying i should consider doing a masters or take more 400 level courses and bring my gpa to atleast 3.0.....
i think this month ill get most rejections.
