Hey. I have been dead for awhile due to studying neurotically and surviving the semester...it's fun but I am pretty much averaging a B in sciences and Cs in gen eds. I ended up running into some freshman adjustment issues, but everything's on an upward trend now.

Anyway, I have decided to consider double majoring in Biology and business. Because I would really like to gain more understanding in economics and how one goes about allocating resources to specific objectives. I looked at minoring first but it does not appeal to me as much as the actual major. I understand that med schools really do not care as long as I am productive and do everything required of me plus; however, from a peer perspective...is it really worth the extra 1-2 years when I do not even want to work in business or own a medical practice?

Business is probably a good backup major in case you don't get into med school. You got to back it up with lots of internships though to actually make it worthwhile.

As for med school, as you said, no one cares.

Do whatever seems interesting.

You sound like one of those types who would get an MD/MBA.

If you really like business and score good grades in it, definitely go for it. I did the same with Spanish which I was good at.

Personally I would not consider it worth it if you have to spend extra time and money as an undergrad. A double major just doesn't mean enough for it to be worth the $$ (considering opportunity cost).

If it doesn't take you extra time in undergrad and it interests you, then sure, go for it.

You can always wait to explore that desire to know more about the economics of healthcare by pursuing an MD/MBA. Ohio State has a good MD/MBA program. I'm sure many other schools do too.

If you are having a hard time maintaining the grades needed for medical school, double majoring might not be a great idea. After all, you can't pursue an MD without good grades to begin with. You might consider switching majors if you think you would enjoy it more and/or your GPA would improve, or you might just stick with the major you have now (biology), if you enjoy it. (I love medicine, but I wouldn't want to major in biology. Plant biology? No thank you.)

Not really, I do think part of it may be that the only two places I have ever been employed where small businesses and I few my first boss' business education really gave him a multifaceted skill set; however, I am just interested in the MD/DO programs right now, undergrad business is as far as I would like to go in that realm. I will also admit that the businesses classes on campus are packed with cute girls and near all the good restaurants. 😀
