I am graduating in two years with goods stats and am very interested in medical school (MD or DO). However, when I was 13 y/o I was charged with a misdemeanor (3rd degree assualt). I am much older now - this was 17 years ago. I also don't know if it is or isn't on my record. How will this be viewed by adcoms if it is disclosed?
Thank you.

To summarize the responses you'll get:

1. You're only required to disclose convictions to AMCAS.
2. Some secondaries ask for charges specifically, even if you weren't convicted.
3. Were you convicted?
4. It may show up in the criminal background check as a charge (I'm not sure, someone more knowledgeable advise on this) but it probably (definitely?) will if it's a conviction.
5. It was a long time ago, just show that you've grown and matured and don't do anything illegal again.
6. Search
7. You'll make a terrible doctor. (Read: this won't actually make you a terrible doctor.)

Your best bet is to first find out if its still on your record or not. A lot of things that young would be expunged.

If its still on your record get a lawyer and see if you can get it expunged.

I'm curious what 3rd degree assault is. Is that like asking someone to ask someone to hit someone?

You should be able to get that expunged (I'm obviously no lawyer though). Some people choose not to hire an attorney since it's mostly just paperwork to fill out and turn in. Give yourself enough time to let it go through the system. It could take a while (Six months?).
