Which apartment are you in? I am going to be renting through them too. It's probably not the same though. I know that I'm not right next to campus.

I am going to be living at the Laramie Apartments.
I have not actually been there, I did everything online and through mail/fax, but my mapquest says it is within 5 minutes of the school... hope thats accurate!

Is anyone still looking for a place? Another female first year and I are looking for a third roommate. It is a 1420 sqft 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house in a newer area of Manhattan (Northeast corner). It is a 5 minute drive from the vet school. Amenities include: washer/dryer, dishwasher, large great room with vaulted ceilings, gas fireplace, large closet, fenced yard with covered patio, two car garage (a spot may be available). Rent is $400 month plus 1/3 utilities. I have lots of photos I can send. Please pm me if you are interested.

Buckleygirl - Thanks for posting that info on American Airlines!! That's going to save so much time and hassle.

In regards to the books, I bought half from amazon and half from Barnes and Noble. I ended up buying a Barnes and Nobles membership card ($25) but it saved me $100. I am getting the dissection kit and stethoscope from KVESS. I want to be loyal to them, but $$ talks 🙂

Thanks 🙂 See you all very soon!!

Does anyone know what we do/learn is cross course integration? Just curious...

Again, this will be an experimental year because this class has never been offered before. Ideally it will combine topics from your core courses in a case study sort of way. For example, if you are studying different aspects of the central nervous system in Gross Anatomy, Microanatomy, and Physiology at roughly the same time, you might go over a disease or case that combines what you've learned in those classes. Or it might not work out that smoothly all the time with coordinating the different classes, but you get the idea. It won't be a difficult class, hopefully just an interesting one.

Umm....I feel like an idiot and don't see where the '09 book list is for us. I see the 08 form, but not this fall?? Is it same one?

i think it was posted somewhere else before but: when does the financial aid go out into our account and pay for classes? because i already looked on isis and it said that i owe tuition but there is no pending financial aid to pay for it. but i know i already turned in all my forms.
also does ksu have a gym? is the membership included in tuition?

From my ugrad experience, financial aid will be put onto our accounts about 10 days before class start, so August 15th or so. We'll get the refunds sometime after classes start, if I remember correctly.

And yes, KSU does have a gym and we get access with our student IDs (that's what part of the campus privilege fee goes to). The gym is nearly directly across from the vet school too, so it's very close by. There are two tracks, lots of treadmills, elliptical machines, free weights, weight machines, basketball/soccer/volleyball courts. Also there are squash (?) courts and I think there's something called wallyball courts, but I've never used those. I just go and run or use the weight machines usually. 😀

We've been enrolled into our electives as of today. Happy days!

But if anyone was signed up for the online class, it has unfortunately been canceled and you've been dropped into the other two electives you picked out.

I was trying so hard not to have classes on Friday afternoon. *sigh*

BTW, has anyone done the: DL Master Promissory Note or Grad PLUS info Request in the to do list on iSIS. If so is it hard to do all that? I was getting lost amongst the steps a bit haha.

I must be blind or something, how do we find out the electives?

Nah, you're not blind, I'm just used to how K-State rolls. (Oh dear, I sound old!) 🙂

Log into iSIS and click on 'Student Center'.

Once you're at the Student Center, you're going to be looking for an AP780 class or two...you'll be enrolled in a section (A,B,C or D). It'll look like AP780-x on the Student Center page.

A is the scientific literature class on Mondays
B is the history of vet med class on Wednesdays
C is the language class on Fridays (for half the semester)
D is the 3d imaging class on Fridays which starts after Oct. 16th.

Or you could be in CS777 (Practicing in a Multicultural Society) or CS778 (Basics of Bovine Therio).

I don't remember about the loan notes because I did them as soon as I got the award notifications about a month ago, but I think that iSIS can get you where you need to be for that stuff. Or you can call financial aid too, they're very nice people and very willing to help. 🙂

The Master Promissory Notes aren't that hard to do at all. There were links to the forms through iSIS, and I think they wound up directing me to the federal financial aid page where everything can be filled out online.

It's been a few weeks, but if I remember correctly it's just basic personal information (name, SS #, address, etc.) and the contact information for 2 references.

The Grad PLUS info. request form is very brief, and a few days after submitting that, you'll be prompted to do an MPN for that loan as well. It's almost the same as the Stafford MPN.

Yep and I chose them and mailed it all back 😛

They might just be doing it in the order they got them back then...I'm instate so they got mine back pretty quickly (like...the day after it got to my house)...I wouldn't worry too much about it, they'll get you in next week most likely. 🙂

At least you got you financial aid stuff pretty quickly...the office was very confused as to if I was still an undergraduate or if I was a graduate student which delayed my awards by oh...two and a half months. /facepalm

I got mine just recently actually because I was off the waitlist late so I am just now figuring out all the details haha 😎

getting closer YAY !

Weird. I'm still not enrolled in any classes. I sent everything back like I was supposed to. Does anyone else not have access to enrollment?

I am wondering about cell phone service in Manhattan. I currently have T-Mobile, which I think worked pretty well when I went out for my interview. I really want to get an iPhone before I move though. Does anyone out there have AT&T? How does it work in the area?

AT&T has two dead spots on I-70, but in Manhattan it works fine. I've never had a dropped call.

how does the refund work from financial aid? do we have it transferred into a private bank account or does it stay at the school and we go to the school if we need money for housing. or do we get a check?

I actually e-mailed financial aid about that today and they sent me a link (within a minute of me sending the e-mail! Very efficient).
http://www.k-state.edu/sfa/soa.htm

So we can either pick the refund checks up during the first week of class, wait for them to be mailed after the first week of class, or set up a direct deposit into a checking account. The form to set that up is linked on the same page.

The direct deposit option is great.

Picking up your refund check seems to be a PITA: 1) there's almost always a line, I heard, and 2) you're going to be busy with school and will have precious minutes of free time.

(eating, sleeping, studying and food shopping become a priority, IMHO 😉

Did anyone else get the orientation week schedule in the mail? I was wondering if anyone knew about the "Coles/Frick Scholars" and "Mosier/Trotter Scholars" thing? Are they splitting us into groups? How do they divide us? Hope everyone's enjoying break so far. Although, I'm getting really excited that it's almost over!!!!

Yep, I got that this afternoon. I have no idea how they're organizing us...the only thing I could think of was alphabetical order and splitting the class evenly into 4 groups.

I am excited for school to begin...one month left. But only two weeks until I move into my house...I haven't even begun to pack yet.

Its alphabetical...and you're actually pretty much just in two groups most of the time-the first half of the alphabet, and the second half of the alphabet. That way you get to know your lab partners and those that will be in your wing in lab right away.

I am about to set up our Internet and cable
services but I'm a bit irritated with past experiences with cox communications. What do you suggest? Thanks in advance.

What are all the utilities for the electricity, cable, internet, phone etc? I thought I saw them on KSU website but now I can't find them... ugh.

I keep this info handy.. here you go.. hopefully it's correct and current:

Cox cable/internet
785-776-9239

westar energy (electric)
800-544-4857

city water
785-587-2480

gas
800-794-4780

Phone is AT&T (landline) I don't have their # handy. For a dial tone, it's $27.xx monthly (if you don't make any long distance calls). Local calls are free. (I watched too many Matrix movies and I require a hardline ;-)

So it looks like Cox it is... Thanks for the information! I would think it's stormy too often for reliable television from DISH? Is this the case?

I have DISH network, and only during the worst storms for maybe a half hour or so does the service ever go out (so not much of an issue). With the package we have, the price is comparable to Cox per month, so there's not much of a difference. We also get local channels with dish, so its probably up to you and whatever you prefer.

This topic may have already been brought up, but did you all get parking permits for parking in the Trotter Hall area parking lot? Are we allowed to park there with a permit? Is it just the regular permit we can buy online?

Thanks!

Yep, the parking permit you pick up (I don't think you can BUY it there! you order it online) at 'parking services' in the building across the street from the vet-med complex (you can order it online in ISIS I think, and then pick it up once you get into town).. it allows you to park daily in the back parking lot (behind Trotter). That's pretty much where we all park during the day, unless you're walking or biking to school.

The front lot is reserved for hospital clients, I think faculty, etc. The red lines signify such, and other signs mark the client-only spots. You can park in the front lot after 5 pm, and I think all day on weekends - I can't remem now.

So, yep, get the parking permit if you're going to be driving to class.

* this same parking permit will allow you access to many other campus lots (each lot has colors and letters... our permits are green and give us access to... uhm.. W, Z and I can't remem which other lots). So, say your folks come to town and you want to catch a show at the KSU theater.. you can park in that lot, for example, with your permit. Or, go see the bug zoo, or the gardens, etc. on campus. You'll get a map with the campus lots you're legal for.

me and my boyfriend are looking for a place to go out later, maybe in aggieville for some drinks... if anyone wants to meet up let me know. more details to follow later, if anyone has suggestions too that would be great

i was just wondering what everyone else is wearing during orientation week. or what people have worn in the past

Great question - I was just looking through my clothes and thinking the same thing!

I have a lot of button downs, pants I wore during interviews (only 3 pair, so I'll be the girl in repeat outfits), flats, maybe a skirt or two... I'm going kinda conservative since I have no idea what they expect from us!

Anyone else have thoughts on what to wear??

For those new first years like myself, I went to AJ's NY Pizzaria last night and it was really nice. Its near aggieville but not on it. Its got 50 cent Beer specials all monday night and cheap prices. The pizza was thin crust an really good. It was packed and there where plenty of students all taking advantage of the deals. If anyone knows of any other good place around here spread the word and maybe we can meet up in what little time we have left before school starts. So far Manhattan has not been too bad besides the two thunderstorms that went through and the one this upcoming weekend.

Yay STATE! yay 2013 ! 😀

For orientation, most people go the khakis and nice shirt routine, but you'll see classmates in everything from jeans to dresses, so it doesn't really matter. Theres no strict "dress code" you have to follow during orientation (or in classes for that matter). People usually try to dress a little nicer for the first few weeks, but soon enough most people will slip back to jeans and tshirts all the time.

Does anybody know where guests should park for orientation tomorrow?

Does anybody know where guests should park for orientation tomorrow?

Probably in the general vet student parking lot would be best (behind the school) -- guests can stop at the information kiosk near the union (at 17th and Anderson) to get a day pass for parking in that lot. I think it's like 4$.

Or they can just park and if they get ticketed, mail the citation to parking services saying that they were a visitor and have no parking pass and only have to pay the 4$.

I doubt parking services is going to be big sticklers, but they can be giant jerks at times.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow though. But it looks like it's going to be rainy...🙁
