Howdy everyone! Just thought I'd start a post for those who've decided upon KSU. Congratulations to everyone (and good luck to anyone on the wait list!!!)

Where is everyone coming from? I'm moving out from Colorado. I can't believe I actually get to start vet school next year! Although, I never thought I'd be so excited to move to Kansas before! 😀

I'm moving up from Texas. I Graduated from Texas A&M (WHOOP) class of '07 and '09 (Master's). I'm thinking I want to pursue mixed practice, but I'm very interested in public health as well.

Your background sounds kind of similar to mine. Graduated from CSU '07 (BS Biology) and '09 (MS Biomedical Science - non thesis masters).

I'm still completely unsure about what field of vet med I want to enter though. I'm okay with it though, because I want to go into everything with a really open mind!

Also, did you send in your deposit yet? What did they say to you about when we'll hear anything else. Now that I'm in I'm pretty excited to see what comes next! : D

Yeah, I sent in my deposit (super cheap I thought at $250) and they said that a packet would be in the mail in May. So more waiting. Gotta love this process! I have scoured the KSU website-it's a kind of obsession one can only understand as a vet student. Or a crazed fanatic...but then who can tell the difference at times...😉

KSU will bill you per semester. I think the tuition/laptop fee/campus use fees are billed in end of August and end of January. My loans/aid are applied against the charges, and any remaining outstanding amount you are responsible for.

So, yes, you get billed per semester, and your loans/aid is applied per semester.

Word to the wise: I know my loans/aid are *evenly* distributed (half and half) for the two semesters, but the tuition charges fluctuate depending on the # of credits you have per term. So you may have a smaller tuition bill in the fall, and higher in the spring, for example. (So if you have "left over" aid money, say, loan money, from the fall - be wise and hold onto it, because you may really need it in the spring and summer months).

I've heard good things about the scholarships available as well as other aid. Do you know how much non-loan aid is typically dispersed? Is it at all possible to get out of this process with only a minor gash in my pocketbook? (I come at this paying for all of my school on my own with substantial school-related debt already...)

Yeah, I'm coming in paying for it all myself too and debt from this year as well. I wrote to the financial aid office and they e-mailed the scholarship application to me even though it was past due.

I tried to ask them whether the financial aid office will make sure that all of my school costs (at least) are covered whether by non-loan aid, or by how ever many loans I need to get that covered, but they didn't really say. I was hoping that maybe one of the current vet students could fill me in.

See, I didn't fill out the scholarship application because it didn't let me choose the college I wanted to apply for scholarships in, it automatically filtered me into the College of Agriculture based on my school records. 🙁

That's actually a huge reason for my choosing KSU. My experience with everyone at the CVM was fantastic, and everyone I met in the town was amazingly friendly. I enjoyed the small-town atmosphere (and admittedly, the Little Apple Brewery which served an amazing stout). I Loved Manhattan!😍

It's kind of weird, but you fill out the scholarship application once a year. Typically it's due by Sept 1. It's the same form for every vet med student and filling out that single, simple form makes you eligible for all of the scholarships listed at that other link SmallandLA posted. After you submit it electronically, they do the rest of the work for you. The school figures out which scholarships you're eligible for (based on residency, town size, HS, etc) and they have big committee meetings to choose the recipients. In November, there's a magic day when all the scholarship letters are put in your mailboxes.

That's pretty much it: spend 5 minutes filling out a form at the beginning of the semester and wait/cross your fingers.

You'll notice that most of the scholarships are for kind of small amounts, but even $200 helps!! I was lucky enough to get a $4,500 need-based scholarship freshman year, but only got $800 this year.

There are numerous outside scholarship opportunities available throughout the year, too. Announcements are sent out over email. These require separate applications and are nationwide. They also involve things like writing papers and getting letters of recommendation, etc.

Off subject, but, if you like Little Apple's stout, you gotta try the Tallgrass one too. Really good. And I'm not even that much into beer myself, but good stuff.

I think Tallgrass brewery does tours every weekend? I'm not sure. I got to go on one last month and it was fun.

Is your Master's in Biomed too? That's so weird that we have such a similar background! Actually this was only my 2nd application cycle. Even though my degree was technically c/o 2007 for my BS, I graduated a semester early (December 2007). So, I was supposed to be c/o 2008.

I agree that we were really lucky with our deposit! Although, even if it were more, it would have been fine. It all goes to tuition anyway! I was sad when they said we'd have to wait til May for more info though! I feel like I've exhausted all of my patience in the application process!

Your loans come in right before classes start, which is also approximately when tuition/fees are due (first day of classes). You get your refund from excess loans about a week after classes start, so be prepared to not get your extra living $$ til then. If you get a scholarship for a couple hundred or so in november, that money is applied to your account then as long as you have no other outstanding charges due then, and it is refunded to you.

They apply the scholarships to the spring semester, so this doesn't affect your loan amount for the fall at all.

Tuition/fees are due...oh, July or August...maybe August 1? I don't really know. Since I'm paying for everything with loans, I just wait for my disbursement every semester (typically the first day of class).

kef148: Yep. Biomed undergrad too. It seems your history at Colorado State was nearly identical to mine at A&M.

So the loans are dispersed in time for first payments, but scholarships get funded later, is that right? Wow...I'm going to really have to budget myself 😳. Oh well...it's worth it in the end.

I have a question for those of you who live in Manhattan.....What cell phone provider do you use? I have verizon and when I was there for my interview I was in extended network/roaming the whole time. Do you have any suggestions for one that has better service?

I personally use AT&T, and I find I get pretty good coverage except in two spots on I-70. I have friends who use Verizon and get great coverage too. A lot of people switch to Alltel upon moving to the 'hat, but I've heard that once going back to a city that the coverage goes down a lot.

You might also be able to call the customer service center and ask if they can change your "home" zone to Manhattan/Kansas since you're going to school there. That way you can try to avoid the hassle of changing providers too.

I use Verizon, and have been fine so far the nine months I have been here, living 10 miles out of town and being in manhattan all day, I always have good service. However, Manhattan is not a Verizon specific area (the nearest Verizon store is in Topeka) so if you think you might have problems you should figure it out now.

I've been with Verizon a very long time, and continued with it. I am always roaming/extended network out there, but I almost never lose signal.

I also update my phone's roaming capabilities (*228) whenever I'm in Topeka or Kansas City, and whenever I'm driving back and forth from home to KS/vice versa.

I think I've noticed many Kansas-natives with Alltel.

The plan I have with Verizon doesn't charge anything extra for roaming anymore, so it works out OK for me.

Ditto to Cookie about Verizon. There have been a couple of times I have needed to go to Topeka (about 45 min away) for cell phone issues, but otherwise, keeping Verizon has been easiest for me since so many of my friends back home are also on Verizon. 🙂 It says "extended/roaming," but they don't charge for it.

So I went to the website they gave me and entered my Wildcat ID # that they sent me. It says that is is set up an verified now, but I still can't use it to log into anything (like e-mail). Anyone have any idea about what I should do? Or maybe it takes a while to activate those features?

I've not done it for 3 years, but I'm pretty certain I was able to access email near instantly (I remember being all excited about it). I don't think break should be holding anything up -- they're still working until 10pm CDT this week, so they should be activating things as they come through.

Email them at [email protected]/[email protected] or give them a call at (785) 532-7722 or (800) 865-6143. Or if you'd like to talk to them online, there's a "live chat" option that's accessible by going to KSOL (http://online.k-state.edu) and clicking on the green IT link thing.

So, I had a sad realization today that I will have to get a new bank when I move. This may not seem like a big deal, but I love my bank. I've been there since I was 12, and it's the best bank ever. No stupid fees. I was even dumb last week (I forgot to transfer my loan money to my checking and paid a bunch of bills 😳) and they didn't charge me any overdraw fees.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you that live in Manhattan could recommend a good bank to move my accounts to. I don't want my stuff in a bank that has a lot of ridiculous fees, and I definitely want one that does free internet banking if there are any. Thanks!

I am actually looking into bank options myself- I am getting married this summer, and my fiance found a great bank with really great return percentages on checking accounts! I want to say it was the First Bank Kansas...but I will double-check.

I was looking on ksu's website and they said that the government only gives you $18,500 and the rest has to be private . i'm was just wonderifn if the school provides you with infor or what also students have used and how much do you take out per year?

Don't freak out about it. I received my financial aid and they offered me enough for oos tuition and living expenses. You can contact financial aid and see how close they are to getting your package together. As long as your fafsa said that you were expected to make zero contribution then you would prob get a similar amount to what I got.

Oh crap, you've already gotten your package? When did you hear, if you don't mind me asking? I've heard absolutely nothing except, "Well, they don't have you in the system as a grad student yet...so that's why we don't have anything for you yet" and I've been in the class with confirmation of deposit since early March and had FAFSA in by the end of January...

Maybe it's because I'm IS and they're doing OOS first. Or since I'm already here and graduating/still have to send in transcripts... God, I hope it's one of those things! Now I'm freaking out...

I've calmed down a little bit now (though I am both emailing and calling them tomorrow), but it may be that they're going in alphabetical order too.

If that's the case, then it's not surprising I haven't heard anything yet, because my last name is all the way near the bottom with 'W'.

On a completely different note:

On the CVM front page there's a link that says 'Welcome Class of 2013' that leads to our composite! We're standing strong at 108 so far. 🙂 And we should be getting our new info soon...I think Frances said it was going to be around the middle/end of May!

Just adding to the financial aid discussion...

I am OOS, came off the waitlist (sent a deposit around 4/27), and submitted the FAFSA a bit late (early April) and my financial aid package was just posted this morning. It's going to be enough to cover tuition and living expenses and is made up entirely of federal loans - no private loans needed.

I did get a letter from the financial aid office a few days ago prompting me to create an eID, so I guess that meant it was in progress.

Sometimes you can find the books online cheaper, but, we are encouraged to buy from KVESS because the organization pays for your junior-year surgery tools.

For the most part, I buy 99.9% from KVESS if no one is selling a book used. Many times KVESS was indeed less expensive than online.
