Ortho research > any research >>>> no research
 
You're still an MS1 so you have tons of time to find ortho mentors and projects that don't take 2 years. For any competitive specialty, you're going to want to have research in that specialty and you're going to specifically want to develop close mentorship relationships with people in that specialty. This is easy to do via research with a faculty member. Ortho has gotten more and more competitive over the years and by the time you apply, it will be even more so.
 
T5 school will most likely carry you to an ortho residency, but why not be on the safe side. Surely all top 5 schools have plenty of ortho specific resources
