Kansas State Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Okay this is me having a last-minute freak out, but a lot of people said for their interview feedback that they were asked questions about "current events and such" like it was no big deal

I'm slightly freaking out about this, because while I have a general idea what's going on, I don't exactly get the paper everyday

The only stuff I think of that's vet related is swine flu and possibly the horse slaughter ban? or possibly health care?

any help would be amazing! I promise I've been doing all the research I can for the past month, but the last thing I want is to be sitting at my interview with this look on my face 😱/😕/:scared:

THANK YOU!!

I wasn't asked any current event questions at all! They only made a reference to the recent "OK" to round up wild horses. I also followed this blog, which had a fair amount of vet news on it...though you'll have to go sifting through old entries/archives because I'm not seeing a lot of "news" posted recently.

I wake up in 4 1/2 hours to get on a plane to go to Kansas...so early!

I need to get up in 6 hours to start driving for 9. Not looking forward to it.

On my way from Wichita for my 2:00 interview now. Eek. Hopefully I'll see some of you there. I'll be in a periwinkle sweater jeans and boots at the pizza party. Good luck everyone!

Eek! My interview is in less than 3 hours! Time to do some last minute CNN and NY Times browsing!

I'll be in a green sweater with a blue shirt underneath and jeans at the pizza party. I'm traveling alone, so come say hi!

Good luck everyone!

Done! For everyone who has the interview left, really don't worry too much. I was nervous but they do a great job of putting you at ease. If you've looked at interview feedback you should be set. No off the wall questions. The tour was good. About an hour. I'd recommend changing into more comfy clothes/shoes 1st. Good luck!!!

😀 I SURVIVED! Good luck to everyone interviewing on Sunday

yes they were definitely very nice! The time flew by.. when they got to the part of "do you have any questions?" I thought they were kicking me out early, but it turned out it was right at the end of the half hour!

I'll post interview feedback tomorrow night, but now I gotta rest up for my Mizzou interview.

p.s. it was nice to meet a few of you SDNers!! (although its really awkward when you ask someone if they are an SDNer and they look at you like you just asked them if they are a gang member 😛)

I'm so glad that's over! I feel kind of lukewarm about it, but hopefully they think better than me.

I have no idea if I met any other SDNers there, but I did talk to a bunch of nice people. 🙂

Is there any way to view the new interview feedback separately from the old? I was hoping to take a peek at what the "new" questions were, and I don't like the new format, where it lumps everything in together. I saw a few of you filled it out already for KSU, so thank you for that!

If you send me a PM, I can give you all the questions they asked me (well, as many as I remember). I'm not gonna tell you my answers because I'm still getting over the fact that I think I botched them up 🙁 Time to not think about that until the second week of February! :xf::xf::xf:

Just got back from the Kansas interview, and it went SO WELL! Maybe I met some of you there, but if you were on the 3:45 out of Manhattan today, you were on my plane!

my interview is on the 23rd!! I am so excited!! what kind of questions were you mostly asked (if you don't mind sharing)???

I agree that the interviewers were really nice and did a great job at putting you at ease. The pizza party was a little different than I pictured it, but it was very informative. For those of you with interviews approaching, don't stress too much about this one and feel free to PM me if you want to hear some of the questions that I remember them asking.

It was nice meeting some of you and for those of you that I didn't I hope everything went well. Heres to waiting for the second week of February!

Yeah, that pizza party kind of confused me. I got there a little late because I couldn't even find the place in the HUGE union, and when I got there everyone was already seated at tables...so much for mingling? I guess it was informative but I had already asked some of the students about housing and stuff. Oh well!

Didn't get to meet as many of you as I would have hoped! Maybe at another school? 😛

I think we all pretty much feel that way. My Kansas interview is this Sunday at 9:00 am and I'm going to the pizza party. I hope I get to meet one/some/all of you there. I have no clue what I'm going to wear but I'm pretty short (5'2") with reddish curly hair. Better yet, if you see really pretty, blonde, curly hair, that's my sister and I'll be near by 😉

Goodluck everyone. I'm freaking and am leaving bright and early in the AM. Back to packing. 🙄

Did you go on the tour around 11:00? If you did, I think I was in your tour group. I remember two shortish girls with curly hair, one redhead and one blonde. If it was you and your sister, I remember thinking that I loved your hair. So red and curly! Also since so many people were traveling with their parents, I remember seeing your sister and thinking, omg they look exactly alike, if that's her mother than she has aged extremely well! Hahaha. After taking another look I decided it must be a sister, because no one's mom looks that young. 😉

That must have been us! I'm glad you liked my hair 🙂 and my sister was pleased to hear she is aging well. I went with both of my sisters, but the other doesn't have curly hair so she thinks that she is the odd man out.

I felt bad because I only spoke to one girl about SDN and she had no idea what I was talking about. Oops.

Did you like K-state and did ou have a good interview?

Hahaha, yeah, I totally forgot to ask people if they were on SDN. Oops. But I did really like K-State. I think people who end up going there will really like it. What did you think of it? I thought everyone was very nice and the classes seemed like they were really social with each other, which I don't think is always the case in vet school. And the facilities seemed pretty up to date, at least in the hospital. And the town is cute! I was expecting a TINY little town with nothing to do, but I was pleasantly surprised. And I stayed in the CUTEST B&B...I wish it was closer to home so I could go there again!

I thought my interview was less stressful than at Ohio where although I felt it did go well, I also felt like they were firing all kinds of questions at me so quickly and it was all over the place. At K-State it was more conversational, and although we didn't get to talk about anything too spectacular, it was more of an easy discussion of my interests in vet med and why I wanted a DVM instead of a PhD.

I was also pleasantly surprised a K-State. To be honest, I was expect a vast boringness and found I REALLY loved the town and the scenery. We're talking rolling hills out of Lonesome Dove here. It was simply gorgeous! All of the vet students were also super friendly, it seems that it's a pretty social school, versus competitive against each other.

This is lame, but I was super excited that they give first years their own desks. Haha! I also really liked that they don't track and emphasize competency in all fields.

My interview went ok, the dropped a bomb on me right as I walked in with the super vague question of "Tell us about yourself". I wish it had been a bit more structured, haha, but I did all right. Mine was more of a series of questions, and I aced the current events one *thank god*. Then again, I was so tongue-tied nervous I botched a lot of what I tried to say. ^^''' Hopefully they understood it was just nerves.

Anyone interested in specific interview questions or discussing how it went can PM me and I can walk you through it! 😀

I liked it a lot there. It felt like a nice family and somewhere that I could be comfortable at. When I toured Cornell I felt that for all the money and the fantastic facility that it was kind of cutthroat. I liked K-State and the atmosphere and town is very similar to my undergrad. Also, David Anderson, alpacas, and a great LA program are there so that helped sell me a lot even before I toured.

The interview I felt went well but since it was my first vet school interview I don't have much to compare it to other than the mock interviews we had at school which was basically our professors grilling us. K-State was a nice interview to start off with.

I saw that you interview at Tufts and are pretty excited about it. Are you SA, LA, or mixed? I've got an interview on 2/3. I can't remember what day you are going. Maybe I'll see you there again. 😀

So far you guys are right on the money with your thoughts. It surprised me as well to come here and see how awesome the town is. It is a very close family in our class and we all share and help each other out. I enjoy the teachers and the family that is created here. I find it a great learning environment and I cant wait till next semester to start here in a couple days. 🙂

Huh....ya know I always thought of Kansas as kind of a boring area with nothing going on and pictured KSU as one of the...I guess 'lesser' vet schools. Now I'm pretty excited about going to my interview later this month.

This is lame, but I was super excited that they give first years their own desks. .

Your own desk? Like an office? Or just a desk in a lecture hall or something, like cubicles? Or something you take home?

I loved the school. I thought the staff and students were so friendly, and the facilities were great.

Like your own little space in the anatomy lab with a desk and I think I saw little cubbies. But you get to decorate!(this thing makes me think of peanut butter jelly time)

I got such a warm feeling when I was down there --- the campus is gorgeous even in the middle of winter! My interviewers were so welcoming and pleasant --- the interview was like others have said --- a conversation. I also got the feeling that it was one supportive family. On my tour, a student said that first and second years often sit with sick colts - take temp, etc. while studying for stuff to help out the students that are in charge. I'm in love with Kansas! :biglove:

My Tufts interview is on 2/10, so I won't be able to look for you...awww. I'm totally excited about that interview though because I heard that their interview process is the most friendly one out there. also, I'm mostly SA, possibly mixed at the moment. I waver! Not quite sure what I want to do down the road.

Also, why exactly did you feel that way about Cornell? I've heard that reputation about their undergrad, but I know a friend who goes to the vet school now and he keeps telling me it's not true for them. I've been accepted there and I'm stressing about whether it's the perfect place for me. There are SO many pro's when it comes to Cornell, but I don't really do well in a super-competitive environment so that would be a big negative for me...

Edit: Oops, maybe I shouldn't have hijacked the KS thread with talk about Cornell. royaltRF, if you have time maybe you could PM me with your thoughts about it. 🙂

So....my itinerary for this weekend sayd the pizza party is in the courtyard?

Someone please please please tell me that in Kansas, the courtyards are indoors...

Nope. Outdoors.

KIDDING! Yea, its a huge indoor banquet hall.

Where did you guys stay/where are you staying in Manhattan? I'm trying to book a hotel room last minute 🙁 and could really use some suggestions. Thanks!

Holiday Inn! It may be $20 more a night, but they shuttle you to/from the airport, so its def worth it. Also, its right across from the school so you can walk to the pizza party, and the school will pick you up/take you back from the interview. Kansas really couldn't be more helpful.

Who's going to the pizza party saturday night??

I'll be there, in khakis and a purple sweater. I've got long dark brown hair, which may or may not be curly. Haven't decided how I'm doing it yet--it really depends on the weather! 🙂

Let's see...I'm short (5.4) and most likely don't talk anything like the people from kansas. And my name starts with an A 😛 See if you can find me!

My interview is at 9:30, I believe, on Saturday morning.

Thank you! They have student volunteers that take you to and from your hotel? 😱 Awesome!!

seriously?? Do you have to be staying at the Holiday Inn to get that option? I'm staying at the Mariott Fairfield or something like that since the Holiday Inn has been booked ever since I started looking over a month ago. How can you get that scheduled? Just call the school?

I heard not good things about the Clarion, so don't stay there zeebra44. Apparently the Mariott is near a mall?

I'll be at the pizza party Saturday! I haven't starting packing yet so I have no clue what I'm wearing lol.

From the itinerary email they sent out the other day:

Transportation: If you need a ride from your hotel to the college of veterinary medicine for your interview you may call our office at 785-532-5660. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your interview for check-in.

Oh! I didn't receive that e-mail (I'm interviewing next weekend though)...🙁, thanks for letting me know! And thanks chii chan! My mom literally said to me "Why don't you check out the Clarion?" Haha!

I'm staying at "America's Best Value Inn". Other than that, the only places with rooms still available (as of last weekend) were the Motel 6 and Super 8, I think.

My interview is at 8:30 on Saturday, and I will be at the pizza party with my Dad. I hope to see some of you there.

This is so exciting!!! We're going to interview at a VET SCHOOL!!!!!:biglove:
(I'm getting out all my wild, half-disbelieving excitement tonight, so I can rein myself in to more professional enthusiasm by Saturday) *bounce* *somersault* 🙂

I stayed at the Super 8... not the most luxurious, but like my mom said, this isn't vacation! So it's a good option if you want to save some money and it wasn't too far from the school. and they had free wireless, free hot breakfast, etc.

and a plus I didn't know about Super 8 is that they allow pets! so you could possibly save a boarding fee as well

Is anyone interviewing on the weekend of Jan 30-31st?

they were so nice. they had people waiting at the small manhattan airport to pick you up. it doesn't matter what hotel you stay at. i stayed at fairfield too, and it was pretty nice. when they pick you up at the airport, you can work things out w/ them (i.e they had continuous shuttles running all day saturday from hotels to the school) and they took me back early sunday morning to the airport too! u can always call that # they gave you too, as i've read and heard from students that the taxi service in manhattan isn't very good.

A heads up for the people staying at the Holiday Inn --- when I stayed in that hotel, there were quite a few noisy people and the walls for my room were ultra thin (it seemed like the area around the door was just a few layers of painted plywood - probably not only that, but you get the point) --- the traffic was pretty loud that night too --- so if you're a light sleeper, bring ear plugs just in case 😉

UGH. my flight is cancelled due to the crazy amounts of rain we're having in the bay area (CA). not sure that i'm going anymore since i don't think its physically possible to get there in time.... ::furious::

oh no i'm sorry!!!! 🙁 I hope they can either work with you or I at least hope you have plenty of other schools to choose from!

I'm staying at America's best value too! My interview is really early too, at 8 am, too early for coming from California. Maybe we'll see each other 🙂 I'll be wearing a black skirt and pink sweater.

I'll also be at the pizza party. Probably in jeans and a blue zip up hoodie and long brown hair. Hope to see some of you there! I'm so excited!!!!!!!!

Good luck to everyone with interviews this weekend!! :luck:

chii chan - I bet they would be willing to work with you - they seem so nice! I hope it works out.

Sitting in the airport now. Flight leaves in about an hour.

Kansas, here I come!

Fellow New Yorker,
Be surprised at how much you love Kansas even though it is in the middle of NOWHERE. I really did love the school. If I get in I will have a way tough decision to make. GOOD LUCK!
:luck:
