Kansas State Interviews

Good luck to everyone interviewing this weekend!

My interview is Saturday at 2pm. Do you guys think I have time after that to go on a tour before the pizza party or should I do that in the morning?

I really liked doing the tour before my interview. Not only did it give me an outlet to blow off some steam, but also helped me gather my thoughts for the "Why Kansas" question.

Anyone know which current event questions they focused on this year?

My interview was at 2 and I had time to do the tour after. They just start a tour anytime there are a group of people who want to go on one. Hope that helps!

🙁 I was supposed to be there Saturday but I couldn't reschedule my flights to get me there in time so I cancelled my flight, hotel, etc. I left a message in the admissions office. She called back and said I could reschedule for next Sunday 1/31. I looked and can't reschedule my flights for that date unless I'm there 2 days early, but I can't afford an extra night in a hotel! Not to mention I don't fly well (anxious + motion sick) and 4 connections is the smallest number I can find to get there.

Kansas, in my heart, was always kind of a back up school since I thought I had a pretty good shot. My heart is still in Edinburgh along with my acceptance to the GEP program. But I wanted to give every opportunity I had a shot. Maybe it was a sign. At least that's how I'm accepting it. =/

Good luck everyone who interviews this weekend and next! I hope your interviews go well and they accept you. I also hope no one else's flights get cancelled due to weather!

Sorry chii chan 🙁 have you considered taking the Amtrak train? I know you've already made a decision, but just thought I'd throw it out there..

Considering it would take 12 hours to get to LA from Nor Cal, Amtrak isn't an option. Though it'd could be cheaper! =/

Oh well. I still have 2 interviews, 2 acceptances, and waiting to hear from 3 more schools for interview/acceptance.

I know everyone not selected for interviews got the "viable applicant" email back in December. At this point can we pretty much assume we have been rejected by KSU?

I got a call last year at the begining of June after getting the "viable applicant" letter, so no, thats not a safe assumption.

Were you one of the student ambassadors? I only ask because it says you are from Georgia and one of them was from Georgia...

No, but it may have been my sophomore buddy who is also from Georgia 🙂

I had my interview 2 weekends ago and she was from Cali and went to undergrad UGa. She helped me calm down right before my interview. Just wondering if it was you. Oh well.

Nope, that was Jordan, she's one of classmates🙂

I am in love with Kansas, and K-State. ! I actually had FUN at my interview, laughed a lot. I think I did well. I met a lot of great people. I already filled out the interview feedback, so that's in there, and I'm heading to the pizza party in a little bit!

I think Kansas just jumped to the top of my list.

For people at K-state: Do you feel like there is enough access to small animals? I know its a huge LA area out there, and I just wanted to know if the hospital saw a large enough SA caseload that the SA people feel prepared enough. This is one of the only things I worry about if I got accepted and went to K-State

I'm assuming by SA, you mean cats and dogs. From what I've seen they have as many SA as any other teaching hospital, I would say that most of their patients are small animals.

If you're talking exotics, like pocket pets. I've been in the exotics ward several times and they always have a couple of interesting critters in there. Plus they just started working with Topeka Zoo, so there is some opportunity there I'm sure.

The SA caseload is actually often busier than the LA caseload, which slows down considerably during certain times of the year. SA is quite busy, expecially since K-state isn't just a referral clinic, we see animals for their primary visits (vaccinations, allergies, etc) as well as emergency and referral for difficult cases. I know its hard for you guys to see how busy it usually is since you come on the weekends for interviews, and only emergencies are seen then. Exotics is usually quite pretty busy since they see many of the pet exotics in the area plus critters from the Manhattan, Topeka, and Rolling Hills Zoos.
As a fourth year, you also do a rotation at a primary care satellite branch of k-state in Omaha to get more SA experience away from the hospital.

This school has a lot of heart. To those who have yet to interview, relax; everyone here seems genuinely friendly and interested in getting to know the applicants. Even if I don't get in, I'm glad to have had such an enjoyable experience.

I also spent a few hours hiking around on the Konza Prairie trails, and I highly recommend a visit there. Beautiful landscape, lots of interesting critter tracks, many lovely animals, and particularly good for bird-watching. If I end up here for vet school, I think the Prairie will be a regular place where I go to relax.

Ditto!! I am in love with the Konza Prairie!

I happened to be on campus today while many people where taking interviews. Good luck to all and welcome to Kansas ! Its a lot warmer than previous interview weekends.

I was in the SA ICU yesterday--wish the tour guides hadn't brought a group by when we were in the middle of CPR *facepalm*....hopefully none of you guys saw that!

Good luck to everyone this weekend and thanks for bringing the warm weather with you! :luck: 😀

Alliecat44 - i was in that tour group that walked by!! Our tour guide was like "And here's small animal ICU..." *he looks inside* "....and moving on!" It was definitely surprising but it didnt make me think anything bad so dont worry! haha (although i hope the poor guy made it...)

ANYWAYS....Kansas was awesome. 🙂 I reallllly liked the school and the students/faculty so I'm really hoping for an acceptance. I guess it's time to wait! Good luck to everyone else!

Haha...glad the tour guide moved on quickly. 🙂 I didn't see you all--just heard that you were there. I was the one in the purple scrubs.

Sadly, dog didn't make it. 🙁

Glad you liked Kansas, though! Hope you come back! :luck: :xf:

Did ya'll have it cracked open or something?

Did ya'll have it cracked open or something?

Nope, it was closed-chest. Our surgery resident did tap the pericardium at one point, though.

Just never a happy thing for tour groups to see! They're not really supposed to look in the main door for that very reason. 🙁

I told the intern that at least they were probably all pre-vets so it jazzed them up instead of horrifying them. 😉 Not sure how the parents would have felt!

Ah, I forgot about the parents. Was thinking "well if they don't want to see something like that...."

I was wondering for those of you already accepted (or current students), do acceptance letters come in a large envelope like they did for undergrad? Or is it a normal sized business envelope? I know this is silly but I'd rather know right when I get to the mail box. 🙄

I really enjoyed my weekend at Kansas State. I loved the school and the people. Does anybody remember the formula they use to rank applicants? I asked somebody while I was there but I forgot what it was. Something like 30% GRE 30% GPA, 20% application, 20% interview or something. Just wanted to know so I can torture myself a little more over the next few weeks until I hear from them.

I was told that it would be a large envelope, hence I pretty much had a heart attack when I got to the mail box and saw that I had gotten a small envelope. Good things come in small packages! 😉 It was an acceptance - so I guess they're just sending out small envelopes...

40% GRE, 30% Sci Gpa (only the required ones), 30% everything else (experience, diversity, recommendations, interview). I have a feeling the interview is only in place to see if you are a crazy person or extraordinary, besides that it's just something they make you do and all the normal people are judged on everything else.

Are you sure about the GRE? I wouldn't call my GRE stellar...40% seems really high. Are those percentages on their website?

I asked the Dean in the waiting room of the interview.

Is anybody else going crazy trying to wait the 1-2 weeks it is going to be until we hear our decisions? I am personally freaking out!

I am a little tense and very eager, but before the information session I never expected that we would be hearing back so soon. 1-2 weeks is pretty good. However come the middle of next week, I shall be running away like a maniac to check my mailbox every day after each class. This is exciting!

I'm pretty sure this weekend is the last weekend for OOS resident interviews. I'm scheduled for Sunday at 8:30 am, so I'll ask for updates on when they're mailing out decision letters and let you guys know!

are all of your interviews at 815/830 AM? 😀

Is that 1-2 weeks from when the last interviews are completed? As far as I know, no one has gotten admissions offers from Kansas yet, right? So they must be waiting until all interviews are completed? My interview is this weekend, so that would mean my payback for having to wait till the last batch of interviews is that I have the shortest time to wait for a final notice. Mid-Feb will be here before we know it. 🙂

I think one person has. It's in the acceptance thread at least.

I predict that they send out letters this coming Thursday or possibly Wednesday. Unfortunately I am not basing that prediction on anything at all. Just hoping we get them soon.

They told us that they would be sending out letters in the first week of February, and I think that goes for everyone who had an interview in January.

Scully, I like your way of thinking! 😀 I am leaving tomorrow morning for my interview. I'm just hoping everything goes smoothly with the weather..:xf:

Good luck zeebra!!! :luck::luck::luck:

Thank you very much! And in case any other SDNers are there this weekend, I'll be at the pizza party. I'm traveling alone for this interview (and really nervous about it), so it would be nice to chat with someone! 😳

Good luck! I travelled alone too, and still had a really good time. I really liked the school too. It was disgustingly warm the weekend I was out, but hopefully it hasn't gotten too cold for you!

:xf::xf: for K-State

I just found out about this website and boy, am I glad I did. Everyone's feedback has done a lot to calm my nerves, even though I'm still freaking out about the interview.

I'm in Manhattan right now for my Sunday afternoon interview and it's a bit chilly. 🙁
