Kaplan says in one of thier OC subject tests that:
the dehydration of 3-methyl-3-hexanol in concentrated (85%) phosphoric acid
describes an E1 reaction because a tertiary OH is treated with a strong acid.
but i thought that H3PO4 was a weak acid... is that a typo?
because if it were a tertiarty oh with a strong acid wouldnt it be E2?
thanks guys!!
