Hey Guys,
To those who have taken the kaplan course.

Does the course actually take up a lot of your time? Do they assign things to do? or is it mostly like a review session where you come in and listen?

Thanks guys!

I am very against taking the kaplan course as it is a waste of money and time. You can spend your time much more efficiently studying at your own pace.
If you search the kaplan course, you'll notice many threads are against taking it to prep for DAT.
One of the few that have done extraordinarily well after kaplan course is UCLADDS001 , however, if you look at his pre-dent profile, he is a very strong student and would have scored well even without the course.

What about the kaplan online course?

I am not going to argue w/ this guy but. yeah its a little expensive, i took the LIVE ONLINE COURSE which is live. For $1100. And trust me earning that kind of money is not that hard. 😎 This guy above me has to understand the fact most people are not disciplined. For some people they need to have set deadlines other than the approaching test so they can do studying little at time. If they set the test 3 months down the road, and no set deadlines some people people wont be motivated enough to do the work.

To the OP yes kaplan will be good enough to keep you busy for 2 months they have soo much material. Yes its a lot of work, and its a good work. Nothing wasted. Its worth your time. They have so many tests, workshops, quizes, so on.... It was well worth my money. and I petty the fool who says it isn't. I just wanted to take the test once, that is why i spent the money so i don't have to go thought it again.

Yes i totally agree with you. I am a person that needs to be motivated to study. My test is about 5 months away, and it's a slim chance that i will start studying by myself during the semester, fall or spring. Therefore, that is why i took the kaplan course during spring semester. I will have a tough semester and will need to be motivated to study for DAT. This is why i asked the question, is kaplan a ton of work? . I am worried i will not get the most out of it because i will also have a heavy load of classes next semester. At least the kaplan course is not graded, ill still refresh all my material during the course, which runs from January - May, all through the spring semester.

Microbiology
Micro lab
Physics II with lab
History of medicine (writing intensive)
Genetics.

I have no choice but to take the kaplan course, it will be better then not taking it, since i will be taking the exam sometime in July.
And by the way, i got a good deal on the course. I won the kaplan course auction in my predental club for $700. I think it will totally worth it.

I'd say the kaplan course kept me very busy, or at least busier than I wanted to be. I'm not very good at studying independently. If I have to read something, I tend to do it very slowly, and I get easily distracted. It took a lot of my daily time to get through that material. I spent 4 hr/day, 4-5 days/week during the course and a few hours per day after the course to get through most of the material. I didn't end up finishing the math stuff. The actual classes took up a lot of time too. I had it twice a week, three hours each. If you add up all of the hours I've mentioned, you'll see how much time I spent. It might not seem like a lot of time, but it was a lot more time than I've spent studying for anything. Likewise, you can expect to put in a lot of time and effort, which is relative to how much you usually spend on regular classes. With 5 months ahead of you, though, I'm sure you'll get through it. Good luck.

P.S. wantVCUdental, thanks for the shout-out.

His ^ Score should answer your Q

Yes i see that very well!
UCLAdds you are a genius, hopefully my schedule will look somewhat similar to yours. I will try to get a head start this winter break and start the course with refreshed material.

were you taking other undergrad courses while taking the kaplan course?

hey that sounds like my class schedule
History of Medicine
Pathophysiology and Lab
Genetics and Lab
Intro to Research
Alpine Adventure!!! get credits for snowboarding haha

I studied only Kaplan material and scored 23AA/23PAT. Do you need the course to do well? Absolutely not. If you are hard working and motivated to study on your own you'll do fine. Is it nice to have all those resources and a structured way to study? Absolutely. Be realistic about your own work ethic and make a choice from there.

Thanks, but I'm definitely not a genius. Quite far from it, in fact. (It should give you confidence that even a lazy person like me can do well on this test. It's not a hard test at all.) I took kaplan during july/august. During July, I didn't have any classes. I was just working. In august, I took my last quarter of ochem during summer school. But I still had more than enough time to dedicate to dat studying. In fact, I had a lot of time to spare this summer, and I probably could've taken a few more classes if I needed to. Your schedule will probably be busier than mine was, but it looks very doable.

It's a lot of work but not pointless work. The class is not really helpful as has been my experience. The instructor seemed to have regurgitated everything from the book which I could have simply read and done myself. The materials are quite helpgul though. In my opinion, It's worth it in the end.
