I was trying to find some information about the Kaplan LivePrep and had a few questions about it, but couldn't really find a definitive answer.

Is the LivePrep course worth it? It would be great to hear back from people/people you know who took the course.

If not LivePrep, what other Kaplan program do you think is better (the retreat, the centerprep, etc.)?

Thanks

Liveprep isn't made to stand on it's own. (Unless you went to a US or Canadian school and already have a strong foundation) It's meant to be done after Centerprep and a couple of weeks before your exam to help solidify material.

It's not all encompassing of the Kaplan material, (which Centerprep is) It just focuses on strategy and some high yield topics to concentrate on.

RetreatPrep is a great way to not have to worry about lodging, food, transportatoin etc, but it's the same content as Liveprep.

I thought the lecturers were awesome.

That's complete nonsense. I have no idea who told you that "Liveprep isn't made to stand on it's own." Or that it is merely "high yield topics." You must either work for Kaplan, or have been foolish enough to fall for their marketing tactics. The LivePrep absolutely is enough, but you have to be aware that it is at an accelerated pace, and that you will still have to study on your own after the LivePrep ends for several weeks to months, depending on how well-prepared you were before you started the lectures. If you just graduated, or just finished your second year as a US or Caribbean med student, then LivePrep is just fine. However, if you have been separated from your studies for awhile, or are an older graduate, then CenterPrep is better suited for you. Either way, don't forget to tack on a good online question bank like Kaplan's Qbank or USMLE World, to supplement your book-reading. I love Kaplan, they really have a lot of great programs for Step 1. However, be wary of what they tell you, as they're main goal is to get you to keep buying (and upselling you on) their products...just like any successful business really.

Also, whether you choose LivePrep or the PrepRetreat, be prepared to STUDY. Too many medical students, come to these courses with a relaxed attitude, because they just slaved away for two years in med school, and want to "live a little." Don't get caught in this mindset, study like an animal, and then party all you want once your passing Step 1 score comes back. You worked too hard to slack off now.

Price-wise, the LivePrep and PrepRetreat are basically identical. If you have to buy your own meals, and find a place to live for duration of the LivePrep, then it's pretty much the same as paying for the all-inclusive PrepRetreat. Unless, you live close to the location of the PrepRetreat/LivePrep, in which case you can commute and brown-bag your own food for yourself. And, yes, Kaplan will prorate your PrepRetreat price if you live locally, and don't wish to stay in the hotel overnight as a guest. Even the professors that teach at these lectures are usually the same. Most are excellent, and really know the exam inside and out. Best of luck in your studies, whichever you choose.

I did Retreatprep and I don't work for Kaplan, and it's impossible to go through everything in the 6-8 weeks of Retreatprep/LivePrep

Like i said initially if you have a solid basic science foundation, then Liveprep/RetreatPrep serves as a review of the material right before your exam.

If your foundation is deficient...You need Centerprep.

The books you get when you do Kaplan are a syllabus, that's even what the lecturers refer to it as. They're meant to be used alongside the videos that you only get access to in Centerprep...or if you use the new Online access to the videos.

Neither do the lecturers go through everything in the LivePrep, Yes they do alot, I mean you're in lectures for 8 hrs a day. There are areas they reinforce, there are areas they tell you, make sure you go over x or y. But they don't go through everything, which as I said before would be impossible w/in the time frame. Which does make the course high yield.

Noone is disputing that you need to be studying on your own or using a qbank to reinforce the material etc.

Liveprep has alot of the content found in Centerprep (obviously with the exception of it being live vs pre-recorded) but Centerprep/Online Video Access is more all inclusive.

You have to determine the level of your basic science foundation and what level of preparation you need for the exam.

Also take into consideration that with LivePrep, the lecturers you get are luck of the draw (there are several lecturers for different subjects and based on availability you might get one of the popular one's or you might not)....when i did RetreatPrep, I thought most of my lecturers were great with the exception of the lecturers we had for Neuroanatomy & Immunology. The lecturers that tend to be on the videos tend to be the better ones....with the exception of the lecturer for the new Patho Videos....ugh....

For our RetreatPrep we had:
Physio: Kudrath
Anatomy:White
Neuroanatomy:Wilson
Pharmacology: Davis
Microbiology: Ruebush (doesn't do videos)
Immunology: Lint
Pathology: Barone (isn't on the new videos and isn't as comprehensive in videos as he is in Live Lectures)
Behavioural Science: Daugherty
Biochemistry: Lane
Medical Genetics: Reichenbecher

In your opinion, are any of the 2011 videos better than the 2010 ones (if you have seen them)? Thanks.
