Hi, I was wondering if anybody had any thoughts on either taking the Kaplan in class MCAT course for a whopping $2k or should I self study using my newly acquired Berkeley Review books..or should I do both? Its not so much the cost of the course that irritates me its the spending 3 hours 3 times a week that could be better spent. I am taking the January 2015 MCAT. Has anybody done both? Thanks!

Only you can decide this, but most people prefer self-study. The cost-benefit usually implies self-studying but some people still like a structured course. MCAT is all about discipline and practicing. The old saying practice makes perfect applies. I would invest in self-study materials instead, you could get Audio Osmosis for example, which has that real-teacher feeling. Kaplan doesn't have the best track record when it comes to MCAT materials.

I've done kaplan and self-study and I recommend the self-study. Kaplan is a very hands OFF course, and they reiterate what you read in their books. They don't really teach you anything new, and the rest of their course is hands off. I would recommend following some form of SN2's schedule, (at whatever pace you want), and studying that way.

Kaplan was a waste of money IMO. My teacher was also very poor. Self Study hasn't shown much improvement for me so I can't really say much. But to give perspective, I don't know of a single individual personally who scored above a 30 using Kaplan and 2 individuals who scored a 35+ on their own self study using sn2 or modified versions of it.
