Hey,

Does anybody recommend using the Kaplan Medessentials over/in addition too the 2012 FA?

I have FA, Medessentials, Pathoma, DIT and Deja Review USMLE Step 1 books.

I am getting really frustrated over which books to use and how to use it in the most effective way.

A kid who took the step 1 recently said FA isn't sufficient enough for the recent Step 1 questions and that MedEssentials should be considered also...?

Any suggestions or recommendations will be humbly appreciated. Thank you!

FA is not enough, but its still the centerpiece of Step 1 studying. Use Pathoma (watch the lectures and annotate in the Pathoma book) to complement FA Path sections, and for the rest (assuming you are an AMG) just hammer down UW and annotate your copy of FA with the info contained there.

You don't need any other books, don't fall for the trap of spreading yourself too thin over lots of resources, just focus to a limited number of resources and do several passes of them.

I actually used Kaplan MedEssentials and it has helped me tremendously. What I did, as I have said before, is I kept both FA and Kaplan ME open at the same time and that I highlighted in Kaplan ME things I found in FA. Things in FA that were not in Kaplan ME, I would write in Kaplan ME with colored ink and the associated FA page #. Then I would try to memorize as much of Kaplan ME as possible, but giving particular focus to the things I highlighted and wrote down making sure I know those cold.

Doing Kaplan MedEssentials also actually covers pathology really well (as it is an annotation of the Kaplan Pathology lecture notes), so there is no need to do Pathoma.

Use Uworld and Kaplan Qbank for practice, with Uworld being by far the primary source and Kaplan Qbank a second source if time permits.

So in all your posts where you say "kaplan me is all you need," what you really mean is "kaplan me, with all of FA written in the margins, is all you need"?

well most of FA is in Kaplan me, so highlight that in kaplan me. there are a few points in FA not in Kaplan ME, and those things need to be written down. Then try to memorize as much as you can, but with a particular focus on the things you wrote and highlighted. its virtually impossible to memorize all of kaplan me, but this system ensures you memorize what you need to know in addition to the tiny facts from ME which differentiates between a good score and an excellent score.
