Why do both Kaplan QBank and UWorld only let you take up to 48 questions in a block when the real thing is 50? Did anyone else notice a month or two ago that Kaplan allowed for blocks of up to 100 and then reinstated the limit like a week later? What was up with that?

lol, the real thing is 48 questions. this changed last year when they implemented the new format. there are also now media-based questions. i would definitely suggest getting accustomed to the format of the test to relieve any last minute surprises when you sit down to take the real deal...gluck!

Phew, glad I asked. I knew about the media-based questions, but overlooked the 50 to 48 change, not that it makes a big difference to me. I guess that's one reason to buy First Aid 2009 instead of sticking with 2008...

Yes, but why is the actual USMLE 48 questions per block? I know 50 itself is arbitrary, but why switch from one to the other?

they added audio/video questions. to make up for the time it may require to watch the questions, think and answer, they deleted 2 questions per block.
