I know that the most important thing about choosing a school is personal fit, but in some ways the interview was so long ago that I forget. So my question is: Just on reputation and word of mouth, which is the better school, KCOM or TCOM?
Thanks

Howdy,

Berto, both are great schools. TCOM is more likely to be similar to AZ, plus more people and distraction, Fort Worth has alot going for it. KCOM is a great school, with Kirksville topping out at 20K folks, with no movie theaters in town and limited or no distractions. (For me and my family that sound like a paradise minus the mountains.)

As far as the quality of the education I think that it is a draw, so location and lifestyle is the only thing left to consider. City life vs Green Acres. Two Season (Hot and Hotter)vs Three season (Humid - Cold - Frozen.) Multicultural experience vs a mostly homogenous group. Cowboys vs Sodbusters. (OK that one is hard to distinquish between!

But at least there is Rodeo in Texas, that is good trauma training) Some of the best Mexican food in this side of the border vs 99 cent Whoopers.

Yikes, I starting to convince myself! Go Texas! Ans I didn't even vote for Dubya

Tuition is cheaper at TCOM for out of states students. TCOM is also probably more research-oriented if you're looking for DO/PhD or DO/MS,MPH opportunities. KCOM is "the Mecca" for osteopathic medicine and certainly has stronger alumni support. Educationally, they are both good schools.

Here's my 1/50$:

Both schools seemed similar to me in these respects: physical layout, administration, classrooms, etc.

Differences: 1) KCOM's library contains a decent volume but is not large enough to hold it. This means practically no tables to sit down and read at. 2) UNT's histo and anatomy labs are in newer (nicer) buildings. 3) There are more research labs and, presumably, more funding at UNT due to the grad school and state-funding.
Obviously, the biggest difference is location - 2 hrs to SL or KC vs 0 hrs to FW or 15 min to Dallas. Oh, there is the difference in weather as well.
Regarding clincal experience, I really don't have much to say although I have heard good things (reputation) about KCOM around the country and about TCOM in Texas. Here is an editorial about this exact concern. He offers a unique take on rural vs big city (DO) clinical rotations. As with anything on the internet, take it with a grain of salt. http://personal.bellsouth.net/mem/k/e/keep/editorial2.html

FYI
Kirksville has one movie theater and a new one will be opening soon. (Not that I have had the time to go there in a long time)

Thanks for all the replies. Anyone know the success rates for residency matches at these two. What percentage get a top three choice.
Thanks again. Luke
