Hello,
My stats are >3.6 GPA(AACOMAS) from a top 40 University and a >31R MCAT with strong ECs. My top choice osteopathic school is UMDNJ but I was waitlisted there much to my disbelief. I was informed by the director of enrollment services at UMDNJ that I am an outstanding applicant and that she is very confident that I will be taken off the waitlist. She even said my interview went well too. She informed me that the only reason I was waitlisted was because they have had an unprecedented flood of applications and that they do not want to yet fill up their class without having a chance to review all applications. I am dumbfounded at this outcome as I was hoping for one MD acceptance this year and here I get waitlisted at a DO. Is it seriously that competitive this year?

I was accepted to KCUMB but I only have until January 16th to place my deposit of 1000 dollars(extremely high!). I am from Upstate NY with ties to the NYC metropolitan area and would highly prefer staying in the Northeast. I have interviews at NYCOM and Touro-NY in mid January. Should I let the acceptance to KCUMB pass without placing a deposit and hedge my bets on getting into NYCOM or Touro? The deposit is so exorbitant..I had thought I would have been a shoe-in at UMDNJSOM and would have only had to place a $186 deposit there. I did not envision that I would be in this dilemma. I'm nervous now that since I was waitlisted at UMDNJ might the same fate await me at NYCOM since both those schools are similar in their competitiveness. Even so, wouldn't I still reasonably be a shoe-in at Touro? I'd much rather place a hefty deposit down at NYCOM or Touro over having to place one at KCUMB and then another one at NYCOM/Touro and then $186 if I do get accepted to UMDNJ. Then again, what if I don't get accepted to NYCOM/Touro? What should I do? Please let me know! Thanks in advance!

Don't consider yourself a "shoe-in" at any school. There are many variables when it comes to admissions that it can be such a crapshoot sometimes. Plenty of people with better stats than you have gotten rejected or placed on a waitlist. Also, read the TouroCOM thread. The class is filling up fast.

Pay the deposit. I'm deciding between KCUMB and Touro right now, so that's a $1000 vs $2000 deposit. As much as I hate it too, deposits are high for a reason. I have other interviews after the due dates as well, but I'm gonna pay up to reserve my spot at one of those schools. It sucks, but you're better safe than sorry. Such is life.

kinda in the same boat. accepted at KYCOM but i have more interviews AFTER the due date for the KYCOM deposit. my top choice waitlisted me so i guess ill be paying the $1000 for my seat and forfeiting that IF🙂xf: )i manage to come off the list or just in case the upcoming interviews dont net me acceptances

As someone else said on another thread:

One acceptance in hand is worth 500 in the bush.

500.

Pay the deposit unless you absolutely will not go to KCUMB under any circumstance. It's much better to "lose" $1000, than to have to reapply next cycle. This is all part of the game. In the end, you will have $100-200k+ debt. $1000 is pocket lint. Not even change, lint

pay the deposit

It sucks. I know. I lost a grand during my app process as well

suck it up and pay...I lost $1500 in this process

1. It's shoo-in, not shoe-in

2. Can't you wait until, say, January 15th, before placing the deposit, and hopefully snag the other acceptance before then?

I'll admit, I would've written "shoe-in" as well. You learn something new everyday.

I paid my $1500 deposit to Erie, and that's $1500 I'll never see again... Either way, pay the money $1000 is a drop in the bucket to make sure you're in somewhere... Start sending LOIs to your preferred schools, but make sure you have a spot somewhere....

Yes, it is extremely competitive to get into a U.S. medical school this year. Period. Pat yourself on the shoulder if you get accepted somewhere, honest. Good luck!

You should send in the deposit. It seems like a lot now, but not in the long run. Also, if I remember correctly, UMDNJ is highly favorable to instate applicants, as in NYCOM. If you're a NY resident, you'll have a great shot at NYCOM. Regardless, you should still put down the deposit considering you don't know yet if you will have an acceptance anywhere else. You may end up putting down $3000 in deposits, and still getting off the waitlist at UMDNJ, but that's not until April/May, so protect your spots now.

Do not give up your seat without having another acceptance! 1000 is a drop in the bucket at the end of the day. You could call them and ask if they will extend the deadline. I have heard of other professional schools doing this. Hope you get your MD acceptance.

LOL, I can't help to laugh. Really? You think you got a lower 30 that is a guarantee that you are gonna get into a DO school? Why would a DO school want someone who is hoping to get into an MD school? You are surprised because DO schools have lower academic requirements but you didn't get in? Give me a break. Your attitude was wrong to start with and if I were the person who works for a DO school committee, you will not even be waitlisted. You don't comprehend osteopathic medicine, you just want to at least get into a medical school. In your heart, you think that with a 31 if you could get into a MD school it would be awesome, but at least I should get accepted to a DO school. You can not be more wrong: to a MD school, your score is at the lower range and for the fact that you have applied to DO school doesn't do you any good. And for any DO school that you have applied, they would think that you are regarding their school as a safety while there are countless more compassionate, driven and sincere applicants out there who have only applied to one type of school, On the surface, your stats seem good, but also, the too much space of choice is leaving every school doubting that whether you actually wanna come to our school. why you then? 😴
