I wanted to gather some information about this school and the students. Please respond if you are a current student at KCUMB or an alumni of KCUMB (or UHS). Thank you!

1. What was your MCAT score & GPA?

2. On a scale of (bad) 1 - 10 (good), how is/was the education?

3. On average, how many hours per day do you study?

4. (For Kansas residents that were also accepted to KU). What made you choose KCUMB over KU ?

5. What was your #1 factor for choosing this school?

First off I'm almost done with my first year and couldn't have been more happy with my decision.

1.) GPA and MCAT- I am a part of a partners program that recruits college sophomores with good stats to come to the school. As part of the program my last year of undergrad counts as my first year of medical school-as another part I didn't have to take the MCAT so couldn't help you there, but for the GPA I had a 4.0 with a double major in Cell Bio and Molecular Bio

2.) 1/10 scale I would give the school an 8 or 9 my only complaint would be that sometimes with the systems approach a lot is thrown on you at once (although I wouldn't want to go to school with any other curriculum- systems is great)

3.)Hours of Study- depends on the section and how many lectures given that day but studying 4-5 hours a day at least is not uncommon (that would be for any med school)

4.) Not a KC resident (sorry)

5.)SYSTEMS- I love the integrated basic/clinical approach to learning medicine for each system (and our Path teacher is very well known and the best teacher I've ever had)

Hope this helps

Alumni 2004

1. 32 H (that's right I said it H) and 3.81
2. 8 out of 10. I liked Genesis and I loved my roatations despite what others say about not being in big teaching hospitals. I learned a ton being 1 on 1 with attendings and stood behind no one for procedures. I did not like the clinical lectures in the first 2 years the test questions were idiotic and sometime contradictory to what the Basic science professors taught. EXCELLENT preparation for boards both MD and DO
3. I took Mon and Tuesday off every week and studied until at least 10 pm every other night and even more on finals week.
4. I was accepted to both and chose KCUMB (UHS at the time) because there was a big stink about KU's board scores and a sub 80% pass rate for step I and a threatened suspension of charter when I applied so I (at the time) reluctantly went to UHS ( like $80,000 more in tuition for education!!). Now I have ZERO regrets. (and BTW KU smoked the boards the following year and have been 90+% since)
5. It was close to home, and alumni said that I would get a great education.

1. 34/3.8

2. 9/10 - loved the systems based Genesis curriculum, felt incredibly prepared for COMLEX/USMLE Step 1 and currently feel like I am very well equipped for anything I may see in my clinicals. The other comments about terrible test questions is right on, but it will prepare you for the randomness of COMLEX 😱

3. During the first 2 years, probably an average of 3-4. On clinicals, maybe 2.

4. I didn't apply to KU and have some friends who are very happy there. With that being said, I do feel like KCUMB is the best medical school in the Kansas City area.

5. My #1 factor for choosing KCUMB was mainly determined by the curriculum and the ability to provide educational opportunities for my wife.

Ultimately, I think that you will be very happy with your education @ KCUMB if you choose to attend. Good luck.

Any other KCUMB students want to respond... please?? 🙂
