I was reading on the website which wasnt very detailed that many students come from all over the country and in their third and 4th years are able to return to the area of the country they came from.

I am from CT, i was wondering if anyone here was able to provide more light on this subject. I dont mind traveling far for med school, but it would mean a lot to my mom of course if i could return closer to home sooner than later.

responses of any kind are appreciated, unless theyre the kind that are mean 🙂

You may have already seen these pages, but here are some parts of KCUMB's website that directly address rotations:

The 3rd year rotations are relatively fixed in the sense that you probably need to go to one of the core rotation sites. From what I can gather, there is some kind of "matching," or "lottery"-type, process. However, during your 4th year, my understanding is that there is more flexibility around location. I believe you may be able to work out some arrangements, such as preceptorships at various locations, etc., with the OCCE office at that time. However, being that I'm nowhere near that point in time, my knowledge is rather limited in that area. You can contact the OCCE office for further and more accurate details.

i see, so saying in my essay that i like KCUMB giving me the possibility of doing my 4th year closer to home is probably a bad idea.. doesnt seem like they go near connecticut

Well, I'm just not certain. It could very well be a possibility. There probably isn't that good of a chance in your 3rd year of rotating in CT, given that you most likely need to go to one of the core rotation sites. However, it may be possible in your 4th year. I seem to recall that some folks set up their own rotations during 4th year at various locations. I believe that you can rotate out of the core rotation sites as long as you can find a preceptor who meets the standards and will agree to take you on. However, again, I'm not completely sure. I recommend contacting the OCCE office and inquiring about it directly from them. At the time of this post, I'm a MS-1, so I don't know much about rotations except what I remember hearing; this isn't the most reliable data. Get it right from the horse's mouth, so the speak: the OCCE office.

Good luck.

hope this thread isn't dead....

is there a way, besides calling the school, to find out how many spots are available for rotations at the various core sites? i'm sure that the core site list changes at times, but i am hoping to get some sort of indication as to the possibility of rotating at one site versus another. is the site match very competitive?

They won't give you the number of rotation spots at each site, they won't even give them to us students. One of the reasons is because they will try to open more spots if there is a particular interest in one site. Say you want to go to Site A, and Site A only has 5 spots. If the school receives back that 7 students want to go there, they will call Site A up and see if they will accommodate 2 more students. Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't, and if they don't you have to rely on the lottery system to hopefully secure your spot there.

Also, the competitiveness of a site will change from year to year, depending on the student body and the number of spots at a site for that particular year. Kansas City has the most spots, while the other sites have anywhere from 3-10ish spots. It is somewhat of a stressful time waiting for the results since it is a lottery system. But, I'm going where I want, so that's all that matters to me.

bout 3 weeks ago 170 was the report, so id say gotta be over 200 by now, but no question ther are a bunch of spots left. not counting waitlist turnover
