Yup, keep a log of the hours. Different schools have different expectations on how many shadowing hours you should be completing so do research on that as well

Ok thanks just didn't know if they would require the logs with the applications

Some schools might require the dentist you shadow to actually write in the LOR to say you have X amount of shadowing hours with them. I know Detroit Mercy does (or did). So just check for stuff like that.

Depends on how long you plan to shadow for, because in the end they won't check the hours. The only validation dental schools will ever have is through the letter of recommendation. I already shadowed/assisted while getting paid over 1000+ hours. I stopped logging my hours after the 300 mark because I'm lazy and I already knew I would do a lot more. If I wanted to know exactly how many hours, then I can always go back and check payroll since I clock in and out with Dentrix.

If you plan to do the bare minimum like 100-150 hours, then it would be worth logging your hours.

Ultimately, I already made a long lasting relationship with the dentist I shadowed, assisted and worked for. I was already offered a job position during dental school and associates position after graduation. Thinking back, I could have easily put 2000+ hours and the dentist wouldn't hesitant to sign it. Ultimately the dentist you shadow for won't keep track o hours for you.

And let's be honestly real here. If the dentist likes you a lot, he/she will let you write your own letter and make up the hours.

I wouldn't bank on this. My buddy did this and an adcom paralleled the writing style of the LOR to his PS.

Also, if you're hitting the bare minimum hours and ask the dentist to lie and let you write your own letter it might come off as a character flaw.

Just shadow enough so the dentist actually has something to write about. It's about 1/2 a page, so it shouldn't be difficult.

Lol i don't think 100--150 is "bare minimum." I think i shadowed about 20-30 hours before I applied. I did also work at an ortho and OS office but I didn't list that as shadowing as I was getting paid to work, not shadow.
