We now have a great excuse to waste time playing video games! Check out this article which discuses how playing video games translates to better surgical skills. It also mentions some of the generalized skills that are improved with video game usage.

Nick Bilton said:
The researchers found that surgeons or residents who used to be avid video game players had significantly better laparoscopic skills than did those who'd never played. On average, the serious game players were 33 percent faster and made 37 percent fewer errors than their colleagues who didn't have prior video- game experience.

A good excuse to reserve modern warfare 3. Those are some pretty significant findings if accurate though. I wonder how physicians who start playing would preform.

Yea I have seen similar articles how surgeons keep a wii in their office and play for 20-30 min before a procedure.

BF3 looks insane.

Anyone ever play Trauma Center for the Wii? It's like a surgeon simulation game, but it gets harder than curse word after a while. All in all, it's still pretty enjoyable.

I know I still get my Halo on on an (almost) daily basis.

...and I'm getting BF 3 tomorrow.
It had better show up tomorrow. I'm hoping my Radeon 6950 shows up today. I dropped about a grand on this new computer 😛

What if you play video games so much that you've developed a minor case of gamer's thumb?

I think anything that requires coordination (sports, video games, hobbies, piano) and your hands will make you better at surgery. Maybe not problem solving, but def surgery.

With a lot of surgeries going laparoscopic, the ability to know your orientation on screen is big, and even bigger if you're able to operate in a "virtual" environment. Your eyes on one thing, your hands doing another, and what's on screen showing even something else can be a little too abstract for older folks and it would take them longer to master than the freshie from residency.

Resident blowing cash on a $250 gpu? I guess some residents do bank

++2 midnight release wooot!

You guys on PC??

👍
BF3 or MW3???
BF3, hands down. Though I'll probably pick up/borrow MW3 for the campaign.

Well, relative to a pre-med on a budget, yes. I know some tech guys who bought dual GTX 280s for this game!

Wow. I don't think my 5770 can handle BF3... Oh well... gotta stick to tf2 and sc2.

Damn. I must be amazing at surgery then.

Also, BF3 ftw (Xbox peasant race, reporting in).

I'm waiting for CS:GO to come out in a few months (ok maybe it looks like a 5 year old game, but it's the reinvention of a classic).

I think you'll be able to run it. 1 GB of video memory is the recommended, with 524 MB being the "minimal requirements", a.k.a. go with a 1 GB card def.

Xbox mw3 pre-orderer reporting in.

Post our gamertags?

Hells yeah, just installed the new video card (only had to flash the BIOS first, no wonder I couldn't install anything else before!). Now if only Amazon would let me download BF3....

Amazon gained some mad love from me. I didn't realize that when I pre-ordered the game I would actually get it tomorrow. Badass!

Amazon kicks ass. Not only do you get it delivered on the release date for free, but you also get the expansion map pack for free.

You guys are all immature. Mw3 or Bf3? Seriously, grow up.

Skyrim is the video game the gods play, and will get my unswaying devotion on 11/11/11.

Uncharted 3 is getting insane reviews across the board. Too bad I ain't got no PS3..

You are the coolest. resident. ever.

Not just for this post. Your other posts always give me a good laugh.

I canceled my order through EA so that I could download it from Amazon. And it was cheaper. I couldn't get at it until 12:50am (at which point I was asleep), so it's downloading now.

So I just checked my Amazon order, and I think I accidentally got BF3 for Playstation, not XBox.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
oh, that sucks 😛

Should have kept the EA Origin pre-order...pre-load the game & run the timezone check through a proxy (somewhere like Indonesia). Result = playing BF3 yesterday.

Turns out I did keep the EA pre-order. Those clowns charged my credit card after two different idiots told me it was canceled. Time to raise hell.

You people and your fancy action games.

Amazon is pretty much the greatest thing ever. They delivered my copy on time, let me have the map pack for free, and I just got a random $20 credit on my account, apparently for buying BF3.

That sucks. Also, LOL.

i remember reading an article in pop sci a couple years ago about this, though cant seem to find it

i could never do digital downloads, bf3 would take me a week. not to mention if i get to 99% and my dsl times out

with this and 11/11/11 coming, gonna be some less than productive weeks...

I was at work while it was downloading, but I think it said it downloaded it in an hour and a half. I'm getting online without a problem, but holy crap these maps are huge and confusing.

I'm not a fan of FPS games, personally. I'm way more excited about Assassin's Creed: Revelation and Mass Effect 3.

Also, I absolutely attribute my (very limited, as we haven't been in there much) handiness with the laparoscopic simulation things at my school to gaming. If nothing else, being able to envision a 3D environment on a 2D screen is critical.

I am an FPS/RPG junkie.

I loved playing halo 3, and I literally spent hours on it freshman and part of sophomore year. Last semester, I figured I'd give reach a shot, and I hate the reticule blooming. So aggravating when trying to get headshots. MW2 was another biggie of mine. And then you have final fantasy, which I love. I'm totally looking forward to the FF10 remake for PS3. And FF13 versus. And FF13-2. And DMC 5. And the new Assassin's Creed. I better start saving up...

laparoscopic surgery is a video game i think. and halo is the greatest fps of all time, but i think mw3 may make me question that
