keeping busy

I am a 4th year med student who missed the 2000 match. I missed the match because I started med school in Jan. 1997. I will be finishing my electives in Sept. Should I keep busy (eg. an externship or observational) between Sept. and match time in 2001? Would it hurt my chances at getting a residency if I spent my time doing something non-medical?
