I just started volunteering at a nursing home and was wondering what the best way would be to keep track of my volunteer hours.

Or, do I even have to? When applying for med school are they going to want to see proof of my volunteer experience?

Just curious. 🙂

Just estimate. The application does not ask for total hours, only weekly hours. I've never had a school ask for proof, but my guess is if they wanted it they'd call the nursing home and ask how many hours you have. That's probably the best way for you to find out.

But with how busy admissions offices get during the season I really doubt they have time to check anyway.

They will only as for an estimate. If you want to keep track, just make an excel sheet. In column 1 you can put the date, in column 2 you can put the activity, and in 3 put the number of hours.

You will be asked start date (month/yr) and end date (month/year) and average number of hours per week. Also the name of the supervisor. Keep a record. It wouldn't hurt to keep a record of the address of the place & a phone number, too.

An excel sheet, like mentioned above, would probably be best. It's kinda nice though, the hospital I volunteer at has us sign in/out on a specific computer and it keeps track of all our days/hours for us so we don't have to worry about any of it.
