Hi,
I live in Louisville and was accepted to both of these schools. They both have their strong and weak points. I would check out each school's web site for general information.
I personally have nothing against UK, but I (as well as my dentist and many of my friends) believe that UofL is the probably the better of the two. UK is in the middle of nowhere and they focus a lot on rural dentistry (which was a turn-off for me). Their clinical facilities are nicer than UofL's, however. Also, at UK students do not have to schedule or call patients to remind them of appointments, and you get still credit for a procedure even if the patient does not pay (as opposed to many other dental schools). One thing I did not like about UK was the fact that they were always comparing themselves to UofL (this was coming from the students AND the faculty). In fact, the first thing my interviewer said to me was "I'm here to lure you away from UofL". I just kinda rubbed me the wrong way, I guess.
I think UofL is more strongly committed to providing quality dental care, plus they score really well on Boards (#4 in the nation on Pt.II and #7 on Pt. I last year). I have been in close contact with the faculty and staff there for almost two years now, and they are wonderful. The clinics are a little old, but I personally believe issues like that are slightly overrated when choosing a dental school. If you can learn on the old stuff, then you will be ready for anything!
Anyway, these are just a few of my insights. Both UofL and UK are great schools, but if I were going to stay here in KY, I would go to UofL. Regardless, I know people in both schools who are equally happy. You probably should just go visit each one for yourself and take some mental notes. Feel free to contact me if you have anymore questions. Good luck!
P.S. I hate the Wildcats - GO CARDS!!! 😀
