yes, it does have to be the exact outline of the structure when entering from whatever face you choose.
in your example, yes a round peg would fit in a square hole...but for it to be the exact outline and, hence, the right answer it would have to be a round hole.

Be sure of how you're looking at the object. If you're referring to a disc (or cylinder), then it could fit through a round keyhole via its face, but could ALSO fit through a square/rectangle via its side.
In other words, if you project a cylinder with a diameter of 10 and a height of 5, the keyhole could be a circle with a diameter of 10, BUT it could also be a rectangle with a width of 5 and a height of 10.
