I recently was dismissed from a PharmD program and was wondering if it was at all possible to get into another school. I failed a my final exams last semester due to my mothers terminal illness that lead to her death (I was driving 14 hours a week to see her on the weekends). I am in the process of doing a retroactive withdraw but haven't heard back yet. Any suggestions on what would be a good career choice if I can't continue with pharmacy? I know it would be very difficult if not impossible to pursue a medical degree if i flunked out of pharmacy.

I am in the process. I haven't heard back from the appeal committee yet and it has been 3 months. I don't really want to waste a semester waiting around if I can take classes towards something else. I do love pharmacy and am not really sure what to if I am not doing that; but I have already been in school for 5 years and if I need to change direction I want to do so as soon as possible.

Sounds to me like a pretty darn good reason. Were you not communicating to your pharmacy school leaders? It seems to me that this is a situation where they could have helped you prepare for this.

you should try an appeal or something but it will be very difficult I guess...My questions is why you did not took a year off or something when your mother was sick?. I am assuming this because I was in a similar situation last year. My father died from pulmonary fibrosis november 2011. And at my school, there is this thing they call "a leave of absence" . I knew I was not going to be mentally prepared for the finals. So I took the leave of absence. Now I have to start all over again this semester...It sucks big time, because I did not get a refund, and I will have to do everything all over again.

Try the appealing process, they might understand what you were going through. If you can, meet with them in person, and insist. It might move their hearts. good luck.

One failing semester gets you dismissed? That doesn't sound reasonable. I have a feeling you have had previous poor performances, and this was your final chance. If that is the case, your appeal may not go so well. However, if this was indeed your first slip up, it is a very forgivable reason, and you should have nothing to worry about.

That is absolutely BS. The school should take into account the exonerating circumstances that led to your poor performance. Did you have a bad grade streak going before the incident? I hope the appeals committee is a little empathetic. I would have failed school if I was in similar circumstances. I am sorry for your loss.

I wasn't getting straight A's but my gpa was a 3.48. I don't know what the committee is waiting on. I have been to the school and I do have to go through the appeal committee. It was only supposed to take a month to hear back. I am thinking about applying to another school but don't know if it is worth it because of my dismissal even though the circumstances were grave.

Thats a decent GPA. Something doesn't add up. In my college, there is no way you would have been kicked out given similar circumstances. I would definitely consider applying to other colleges. Your circumstances were grave enough to warrant that. What year of your pharmacy education are you in?

I would've been going into my third year.

When I was in school, there was a three strikes you're out policy that said if you failed the same class three times then you were suspended for a year from the program. One girl failed therapeutics three times and was suspended with a 3.7 GPA. She reapplied for the program but was denied.

3 strikes is a little on the liberal side. My school had 2 strike rule. It seems like OP only has had one strike so far which makes me wonder wtf is going on. He also had a plausible excuse.
