Hey Guys,

I was just wondering if it is possible to have children while in dental school? And how D-schools look at it.

Thanks. 🙂

I have 1 and another on the way (and I am not mormon). I will admit that life would be easier if we did not have children but probably not as fun.

Are you a man or a woman? I think this impacts things very differently. It's one thing to miss a couple of lectures for pre-natal appointments and not get any sleep after delivery, but it is an entirely different thing to HAVE a baby in the middle of school. There are a couple of women in my class who have done it or are doing it, but I sure don't understand how they do it.

Of my 4th year class, I'd guess probably close to 20% have had or are due to have at least one child while in dental school. Our school is great about it--maternity or paternity leave if needed, clinic schedule adapted, professors are generally workable, etc. No complaints whatsoever (having been through it first-hand) expect for the lost sleep...and I lost just as much of that with out first before I started dental school.

As long as the breeders don't become a burden on their study group/research partners who were responsible enough not to get themselves in that situation, it's fine with me. 😍

My dental class started dental school with 7 children for roughly eighty students. We left dental school with over 35. We had a couple of female students who had their first kid during summer break between 2nd and 3rd year and then again at the end of fourth year or around graduation. For guys it isn't quite the same sacrifice as it is for the females. All graduated on time and all of those two child women in my class still graduated in the top 25% of the class. They were remarkable women, good collegues, efficient, balanced, and hard working. Isn't that the beauty of dental school and dentistry? I think we all went into for the life it lets you have outside of it....

The administration always doted over our class saying we were so mature, stable, and family oriented. The other years just acused us of having alot of unprotected sex....

Funny, there are a lot of folks who'd look at this issue from the other perspective...the "breeders" are in a position that they can responsibly undertake being a parent. 🙂
Of those I mentioned above that had kids during school, I believe most all were planning/hoping to have a child instead of dealing with the consequence of irresponsiblity. It seems these students are often the ones keeping the study groups/research partners afloat, not the other way around. You've got more than just yourself depending on how well you do in school.

If you are a female, I would stay away from having a child during your didactic years.

I know a girl at my school who had a child in her 3rd year. She finished all of her competencies before almost everyone in her class. Earned excellent marks in her didactic courses and still managed to get involved. She was so far ahead that she was able to take 12 weeks off without missing a beat. It is possible but you have to get ahead and not let yourself get behind

in our class of 75 students:

one lady had a baby right before the summer (now about 8-10 months old?).

another lady had one right after our first exam block in november. AND she had to travel hours ONE-WAY (so 3 hours total) to school everyday yet still showed up for every class, lab, etc, up until she popped it out. she still seems okay even now too, with keeping up/going to class.

2 guys in our class have wives that are about to pop any day now...

Yes its possible, and most dental schools are just fine with it. Of course it all depends on your work ethics, relationship with your d-school and so forth. Everyone is different and can handle different things...I just finished with three kids, one born just before starting and one in my last semester of school. We also had at least 5 girls in our class that had a baby or just before starting school, but I would agree that it is much more taxing on the ladies.

My dad did it, with a 3 year old and 5 year old.
Of course it was rough, but everything worked out fine.

On the flip side, there was a woman in my dental class, came for the first 2 weeks and then had to withdraw.
