Hi guys!
My friend and I want to apply to medical school. We took all of our pre-requisites together, but she didn't do very well overall. I think her GPA is 2.9 or something. She doesn't think she can get into a medical school in America so she wants to go to school in the Carribean at Ross University. I don't really know anything about the schools outside of the US. I'm a little worried about her. Is it safe? Is it frowned upon to go there? I looked into it a little bit, but can't really tell. I was wondering if anyone could help.

Thanks!

Going to the Carribean for medical school does mean living in a developing country, and it's not like she would be living at Club Med. Also, as a foreign medical graduate (FMG) who is a U.S. resident, she definitely can match into a residency program in the U.S., but she would get whatever is left after doctors from U.S. schools are matched. You have to do very well at a foreign school in order to gain a residency. Ross does seem to have the strongest connections in the U.S., since I've heard that some (or maybe even all) of their 3rd and 4th year hospital rotations are in the U.S. That seems like the best bet for a Carribean school to me, because then you only have to live there for 2 years instead of 4, and you can make connections for a possible residency placement.

That being said, someone with a 2.9 can get into a U.S. school if they have great EC's and a very strong MCAT (12's or above in all sections). Doing a Master's program like Georgetown's SMP might also be very helpful, but she would need to be able to hack it in heavy duty science courses, so maybe a few more upper division ones are in order before she attempts to do an SMP.

As for GPA, what is her overall GPA? If it's above a 3.0 that would be helpful, both for a Master's program (since many schools have cutoffs at 3.0) and for medical schools (there's something about being below a 3.0 that's very difficult to overcome).

Hope that helps.

Well this forum is as anonymous as you want to be so don't worry about telling us if your "friend" is really you.

Ross is one of the better Caribbean schools from what I understand. I don't know first hand but you should try asking on the Caribbean forum. My understanding is that you do clinical rotations in the states so it makes it easier to get a residency as well. Scroll down on the main forum page and you will see a Caribbean forum. Ask there.
