Klor-Con versus Klor-Con M

Could someone please kindly explain what the difference is between Klor-Con and Klor-Con M? Per FDA, the two products are not interchangable. I looked into the package inserts for both products and still could not figure out the differences. They are both extended release potassium chloride. The Klor-Con M contains microencapsulated crystals and it's an immediately dispersing tablet. Also, is Klor-Con 20Meq discontinued? THANKS!

Klor-Con is a wax matrix tablet. Klor-Con-M is micro crystalline tablet. If ever given the choice I would always choose Klor-Con-M. It is a much safer product.

Klor-Con: must be taken whole, cannot crush, cut, or chew.
Klor-Con M: can be cut in half or dissolved in 4 oz of water.

I would suspect it has to do with the differences in dissolution data and hence why they are not approved as bioequivalents by the FDA.

Sometime Medicaid won't cover Klor-Con M. However that should be the go-to with ambiguous orders

There are a million different KCL products, many of which are not interchangeable. And many doctors also don't know and don't really care.
