In HY and on a couple of Q bank questions, Klumpke's palsy is associated with hyperextension of the arm during baby delivery... but in first aid, they dont mention, but they do mention trauma "trauma during delivery" but they have this under Erb-Duchenne...

im a wee bit confused. Can trauma during injury (I am supposing something similar to a blow to a shoulder) also cause Erb-Duchenne?

anyone know?

Most common is Erb-Duchenne, due to delivery of the anterior shoulder. If that arm is then used as a traction apparatus to help pull the rest of the baby out, then you can get Klumpke's. Most likely, it is Erb-Duchenne though.

5 pts for the phrase "used as traction apparatus"

100% LOLium

erb's is caused by 'traction' 😀 or tear to the superior trunk of the brachial plexus, klumpke's is caused by damage to the lower trunk (C8, T1) during delivery, ie. if the baby is born breech with its arms extended over its head.

i struggled with this yesterday too, but figured it out between FA and Qbank.

hope this helps
