Hi all,

If someone out there could confirm this, I'd greatly appreciate it. My understanding is potassium permaganate will cleave alkenes in acidic conditions, and it will add hydroxyl groups to form a 1,2-diol in basic conditions. Is this correct?

Thanks a bunch,

REH.

KMNO4/H+, heat cleaves alkene and adds carboxylic acid group,

while KMNO4/cold dilute HCL cleaves alkene and add vic-diol.
