Is it really that helpful to know someone in the program you are trying to get into? Like a resident or an assistant professor that is willing to help you out?

If someone had a lower board score say 230, which MAY very well get screened out. Do you think having someone put in a good word or a phone call can still garner you an interview? I wasn't sure how this "screening out" process works! Any advice is greatly appreciate 🙂
