I have an upcoming away rotation at KU Med Center in Kansas City. Can anyone comment on this program from experience or any reputations that I should be aware of?

I'm freaking thrilled to get back in the OR after almost 4 months of non-surgical rotations but want to be prepared. Thanks to anyone who can help.

PM sent.

I started residency with a guy who graduated med school from there. He left the residency and so did I--b/c it really sucked at that time--but we are still in GS. From talking to him, it was your typical academic, busy hospital med school experience which he liked..so if that is what you are looking for- you will be really happy.

Send a PM to GSresident...He is PRS but did his GS training at KU

I talked to a guy who had done GS at KU and matched into plastics for '08 on the West Coast--from what he told me it's pretty malignant, but so was GS at my med school, so I guess it depends on what you can tolerate, and how you feel about Kansas City/the Midwest.

Thanks for all the responses everyone (& the PM SLUser). I actually love the Midwest & would like to stay & practice here eventually. In a sick way, I'm actually looking forward to seeing what a 'malignant' program is like. We're all gluttons for punishment in some way, aren't we?

Indeed. Most of us residents here routinely get beat down on a near-daily basis.

As I recall, when I interviewed at KU way back toward the last milennium that they had a great gym and all their surgery residents were very buffed. Good way to work out your aggressions I guess!😛

I interviewed at KU for plastics but we really didn't see any of the GS residents or attendings. I ended up ranking them pretty low for a variety of reasons but I don't really know if my opinion of their plastics program could translate to their GS residency.
