I'm brand new to this forum and this is my first post, I've found this to be a GREAT resource. I would appreciate any feedback that anyone has to give...

I have just been granted my first interview (to ANY school) after two years of applications, and it is with KU. Anyone out there with any advice, tips, things to look for, ANYTHING that might give me a better chance? Thanks for your feedback!!

Dave

I recommend looking in the "interview feedback" section of SDN (see top tab under "interview"). It is a great resource and will give you a thorough idea of what the day is like and also what kind of questions they tend to ask. I interviewed there a few months ago, and it was fairly laid back. You do two interviews, a one-on-one and a two-on-one. My interview with two people consisted of a faculty member and a physician from the community who is not a voting member on the adcom...I felt this one was harder because I didn't really feel like I was interacting or conversing with them (like the one-on-one), and instead it just felt like they would ask a question and write down my answer, then move on. Everyone there was really friendly and eager to please, so try to relax as much as is possible (which I know is difficult, especially with your first interview). As a school I think they are more geared toward primary care, so it wouldn't hurt to research a little about rural/primary health care issues in Kansas. I didn't get asked about it, but it certainly can't hurt to know what kind of settings they work with. I think the important thing is to be yourself, and answer questions honestly. It was a fun interview day, and you get a lot of opportunities to talk to current students so have a lot of questions ready in advance so the opportunity isn't wasted. More importantly, good luck...you'll do great. :luck:

(if you have any specific questions I might be able to help you with, feel free to send me a pm)

I just got invited for an interview today. What is Kansas City like?? Just curious to know.

The interview feedback section helped tons, thanks alot. Kansas City is very friendly, although it was a bit of a culture shock coming from Denver. The city is very well established and has a lot of great tradition, almost gothic-like architecture in some parts, and the second largest amount of fountains in the world, next to Paris, France (I know, useless info!). I actually work at KUMed and live very close to the hospital, which is all near the historic Plaza district, which has tons of great shopping. People are very friendly and the hospital has some great facilities, including a new heart hospital addendum which will be finished winter of this year. In all I would say that the city has exceeded my expectations of a laid-back midwestern city. Lots of things to do, lots of history, and very in tune with the modern arts.

I interviewed at KU in late November (accepted three weeks later). Both of my interviews were incredibly laid-back and wonderful. I couldn't have asked for anything more.

My open-file interviewer knew my dossier backwards and forwards. A couple of introspective questions about my research and clinical experiences, a couple of hypotheticals, and for the last thirty minutes, we just chatted. Same with the second, closed-file interview. Grades, test scores--none of it was mentioned--and for good reason, it's redundant information from your AMCAS. They really just want to obtain a sense of who you are as a person, so relax, be honest, and enjoy yourself!
