KU Med Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
After taking a closer look, It won't be so bad...most of the afternoon schedule seems to be divided btwn two groups. I wonder what the e-learning is all about and the online 'formative exams'???

Formative Exams = Practice Exams. These usually have the same type of questions that will appear on the exam and serve as an example what the course director thinks is important. Occasionally, a few of the exact same questions appear on the actual exam.

yep, i am really focusing on not thinking too much  do you know what they are discussing in particular? i am a little nervous about being the first years with the new curriculum. i checked my email today and got an email from the person that i guess is my student mentor? did anyone else get such an email? also, is anyone excited for the white coat ceremony, or, is it hokey (sp?), anyone have any info? hope all is well in your worlds, jayhawkers.

White coat ceremony is a little hokey but not too bad. Really, it's almost more for your families and loved ones. It gives the school a chance to explain to them that what your doing is hard and important and requires sacrifices from everyone. For example, it wasn't until the ceremony that my wife (who is a nurse and should know better) began to realize that med school is not just like all my previous college courses. It's also a nice recognition that you've finally achieved what has been your goal for so long (getting into med school). Finally, it kind of signifies your acceptance into the medical community. You are the most junior member possible, but your still a member and those in medicine will recognize that work to help you whenever possible (not just medicine -- I got out of a traffic ticket once by explaining that I was med student and just hadn't had time to renew my tags and that I wasn't going to until after my test on that Friday).

noelle, did you post some cute pics of your kids? i couldn't access them b/c the forums have been a little funky lately.

I did, but I took them down because I was afraid I was putting too much personal info on sdn. I'm sure I'll show you guys soon enough. You'll know who I am because my sdn ID is basically my name.

I missed out on a whole bunch of posting because I've been out for two weeks. We moved to our new house 🙂 and I just finally got internet hooked up again last night.

I'd offer advice, but Soup is already doing such a good job educating the youngins.

All I can say is... if the instructor seems like a nice guy, wears Birkenstocks, and rides a bike to class, he is in actuality THE SPAWN OF THE DEVIL. Just a little heads up.

Who is all living in KC already? I'm thinking about organizing a get together. I just don't know what or when yet. Any ideas? I got an email from an MS-II about a June 22nd get together, but couldn't check my email till yesterday, so I was a bit late. oops.

Hey everyone,

I'll be starting at KU Med this fall and I need a place to live. I was wondering where would be a good place to live? I'm from out of state so it'll be hard for me to do an extensive search in person, so any pointers would be appreciated. Also, is anyone looking for roommates? Let me know....thanks =)

The area around KU med is not the best but there are a lot of students that live in the apartments/rentals around KUMC. I live in an apartment complex in Mission which is about a 5-10 min drive to the hospital. Mission is nice and I'd recommend living somewhere a little way from the campus...just so you never have to worry about someone taking your car for a joyride and also to give yourself a break from the school environment.
I live off of I-35 and Lamar...another place to look would be in Roeland Park somewhere (I-35 and Roe). The further south along I-35/69 South you go the nicer things get generally. If you stay near the hwy, the commute won't be bad considering classes start at 9. As far as the roommate option, I cant help you out because Im married.

Despite what I said about the area, the main reason I didn't live near KU was because my wife was worried about the safety factor but if I was batching it, I wouldn't mind the convenience of walking to class.

Good luck and see you in a month.

Whats everyone doing for health insurance? Im looking at the student insurance plan offered through KUMC and will compare costs/benefits to my wifes insurance through work.

Has anyone assesed the KUMC policy?

I'm using either the KUMC plan or the Kansas plan. They both look fine to me. I plan on using the clinic whenever I need anything anyway, so I won't need anything fancy. I just wish they'd cover my kids for cheaper. Do you have the website with the plan details? I can give you some of that info if you need me to.

This is a help if you are not married and have kids or if married and you can qualify, but you might check into "Kansas Healthwave". I don't know the website, but it is KS medicade. And, if you don't qualify, your kids might.
Good news. Its free. no copays, no premiums, etc... There are levels of insurance. It might take a couple of months to get "in", but that would save you a few hundred/thousand a year 🙂 🙂

Really, any student should try and qualify. But, those with kids are under a little extra financial pressure.

Good luck!

I considered using the MC + plan for my kids (we're Missouri residents btw) but my husbands too proud to go on medicade. Plus, he thinks Truman hospital is the only place that accepts medicade (is this true?) he works with medicade some at Truman with the group of Ophthalmologists that go there once a week, and hes not impressed (he's a tech, not a doctor).
We may spit out $200 a month for BCBS.

Hi all! I, too, just moved and just now have internet again. talk about feeling disconnected to the world! If I may ask, who did you all use as your lender for the fin aid? Just trying to gather any info, if anyone knows who is more reputable, better advantages, easier customer service, etc?
Thanks!

what do you mean by the Kansas plan? the Kansas healthwave plan? sorry, without internet, I am a little behind with my info! 🙂

I'm not sure what the plan is called exactly. This is the info I have. Also, a website to check out is www.studentresources.net. good luck with the website, I never really figured out how to navigate it. I had to basically act like I was purchasing the insurance to find out details and then didn't know which type of insurance I was buying (state vs school).

Truman is not the only place. In fact, you will find quite a number of private physicians accepting medicaid.
Now...as far as your husband goes... 1 John 2:16
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
Pride, the easiest of all sins to take residence. Suck it up, save the money and laugh, knowing you just saved 2000.00 this past year and you can now take a little vacation or have a better Christmas. When you are making good money, donate it back to those who are on medicaid or even less!

Yep, getting the kit on thurs. I'm excited, but a little nervous. Is anyone else nervous?

Are you doing pics Thursday too? I'd like to, but I'd have to take my kids with me - its probably better for me to do it Monday. I don't want to be dressed up all day Monday though.
What are people wearing for pictures?

I don't know what to wear. I guess it is for the yearbook? So, does that entail a suit jacket, nice shirt or what? Not to mention it is 103 degrees outside and I would not like to sport that look on Monday, either. I think I am going for the pix tomorrow. Cut down on time on Mon. Maybe you could take your kids? I don't know, I am sans child. I don't know if I am going to get the kit Thur or not b/c just got an email saying that we should wait. Are you going to the social function at John's upper deck on Thur night?

I don't know about the social - would like to, but I'm gonna have a crazy weekend with a brother in law getting married, (daughter is flower girl and husband is best man). I've got so much to do before classes start, I may stay home with my family/try to get stuff done.
I decided not to do the pictures. I guess its just for the composite picture anyway, we'd still have to take another pic monday, in which case I'll have to dress up anyway. I'm thinking I may wear a cute dress. I don't want to be the only one in a dress, but it will be a lot more comfortable than my other options. Honestly, I want to wear some cargo pants and a comfy shirt, but I don't think thats gonna happen.

I hear you. I went for the pics today and had no idea what to wear b/c i honestly didn't really understand what the composite pict was all about, but, fyi, most of the girls just had a button up shirt on, and a few had a cute short sleeved blouses. so, you may not have to get to dressy for the pix. i think a dress sounds cute. but, i'm into dresses. well, hope this weekend is not too crazy! weddings are so much fun, hope you have a blast.

What they do not tell you (I didn't get the message) was this pic is yours for the next 4 years. So...If you are goofey lookin'. You will be goofey for 4 years and known as goofey to all of your attendings and especially the nursing staff!
Dress in a nice blouse, but not stuffy :scared: and just remember to relax before they take your pic.

Is the shirt all that matters, or are there any full body shots?

hey guys, just wanted to welcome you all to KUMC....for this upcoming week, make sure your #1 priority is to have fun and to meet lots of incredible people. prepare yourself to introduce yourself about 170+ times. this is an exciting time and you all should be very proud of yourselves to make it this far. i wish you all the best :horns: feel free to drop me a PM if you have any questions about academics or life in general

Weird, i just read that as full body shorts, and thought, what the....??? but anyway, no full body shots. I had a cute suit jacket on, and I may consider that a bit much. I would go for a nice blouse.
just would also like to thanks for the many welcomes we newbies have received! 🙂

were there a lot of our classmates there today? did you go to the party last night? details! 🙂

There were a couple of girls and guys I stood in line with while getting the student ID. Very nice, all seemed excited. can't remember anyone's name 😳 Um, yeah, hope to get better about that. Nope, didn't go out to any of the socials. My hubby and I had a small party last night so I was sort of gearing up for that. Are you ready for mon? are you going to wear a dress?

Well, I'm not sure about the dress yet. I had to wear a dress all day today (wedding) and the shoes that I wore (also the shoes I'd wear Monday if I wore the dress) weren't nearly as comfortable as I remember them. Hmmmm... I guess I have some leather sandles that would work. Yeah, I'll probably end up wearing the dress. I reserve the right to change my mind though. 😛

As long as you are not getting your pic taken, relax. Last year, Monday, there were a number of people dressed, but mainly dress casual. Then, by Wed., it was nice shorts, sandles, etc. Whatever makes you comfortable is really the rule, unless you are impressing someone or there will be an invited speaker in class, then they ask you to be at least... presentable  😴 By the time the 1st week of school was over, it was whatever was clean and by the end of the 1st month, it was whatever you hadn't worn twice  Nahhh, that really doesn't happen til' finals and shelf time! :scared: That is when you see dark circles and coffee pots instead of smiles and Nalgene water bottles you remembered from August. Orientation is really that. Nothing demanding. Just meeting people in class, eating free food, walking around, hearing how you need to study and how great you are! It was fun for a while and then I was ready to get to work by Wed or thurs. But, they have some good points here and there.
This is what not to forget! Pearl coming down from above... so read this carefully The first few weeks seem like, sort of a review and pretty easy. DO NOT assume the exam will be. From day number 1 and therefore throughout this entire year. Study! Don't take the easy stuff for granted. Study hard and often.
Bonus pearl: Dr. Helmcamp - your prof for the entire 1st series is notorius for pulling detail. And not any detail, but the detail inside the details. Everything he sends you in an email, read thoroughly, even if you do not think it is relevent, b/c it might be, it might not. Every powerpoint is a picture/diagragm, etc. and will have some detail in it, but he will offhand mention somehting about a protein not involved directly in what the pwrpoint is talking about. That is question # 31 on exam 1.

Enjoy orientation :meanie:

Ok, just read that as Dr. Hellcamp, not HelMcamp. Does not bode well for my attitude thus far! just joking. good to know about dress code and such. i appreciate the study tips, etc. b/c i have a feeling this is not like undergrad. i hope we have powerpoint on our tablets, b/c i don't have it at home.

So whats wrong with wearing a dress for pictures? Is it necessary to wear a suit jacket, or a button down shirt?

So, onephile, I guess I'm not going to wear that dress after all. I'm wearing a button down shirt and some knee length shorts.

That sounds cute, too. A dress would also be okay in my opinion, as long as you are comfortable sitting for long periods in it. I am also wearing a nice shirt and knee length shorts. Well, I'm off to read before bed. See you tomorrow! 🙂

I wasn't on SDN, actually 🙂 Would have replied had I been. I'm in Murphy. So what do you think of the tablets and the homework we are already suppossed to be doing for Mon?

homework? I heard in passing (wasn't really paying attention) one of the speakers (anatomy prof?) saying something about studying, but he's the only one who has said to study, we don't really know what we're supposed to be studying anyway, what good would it do?
I thought the prevailing throught is that we should play it cool this week and expect to bust our tails starting next week.
I like the tablets, am having a little trouble getting the wireless to work at home though.
so, who are you anyway? hehe, its funny, the class is so overwhelmingly large that there is little chance of us actually getting to introduce ourselves this week. Hmmmmm.... I'm thinking that tomorrow I will wear a blue shirt with a little owl emblem on it and some dark cargo pants tomorrow, if you want to look for me. I've been sitting somewhere near the back of the room during the "classes".

Sorry, didn't really read this until today. I was refering to the stuff I think we are suppossed to have read for Mon- I think it is Biochem. It is on Angel. I am just trying to get a really good grip on the tablet right now. I like the tablets, too. Really cool. My wireless is not really working either, but we are going to Nebraska furniture mart this weekend to pick up a router, they are on sale. I am getting a weak unsecured signal from somewhere, but it is spotty. By the way, I am Alex Liggatt (girl- or should I say...woman! 😉 ), and I have been sitting all over the place.

oh, yeah, I think we are officially the only ones who look at this anymore

yeah, well, there wasn't a whole lot of us in the first place. I have sort of lost interest in SDN since getting into school, as time goes on, I'm more bored with the pre allo forums and the allo forum doesn't have alot of movement. Oh well, I'm sure next week will come hard and heavy and I won't have time to come here.

Ok guys . . . how's it going so far? I know you haven't had any exams yet (BTW when is it), but what are impressions of KU SOM so far? Is it what you expected?
