Hello,

I am in the midst of filling out my AMCAS application and I had a question for those of you familiar with the application. When it asks if the class had a lab, should I include computer labs? I took a bioinformatics class that was half lecture and half hands-on actual bioinformatics. Does this count as a lab or do they mean strictly wet labwork? Responses greatly appreciated. I read the whole instruction manual (all 70 pages) and couldn't find my answer...

I really don't know - best bet would probably be to call AAMC. I'm familiar with your predicament, however - I had a couple of computer courses which, per the university catalog for the semester I took them, included lab credit. If they had lab credit listed, I listed it them way on AMCAS - "Computer Programming and Lab". It passed verification.

Yeah, contact AAMC for sure. At my school, classes with labs are 4 credits instead of the usual 3. If your school has a similiar credit system, that might make it clearer, too.

Thanks to both of you. I haven't gotten around to calling AAMC yet, but will do so shortly. and I'll be sure to report back on what they decided.

All right. Here is the official word from AAMC. If you feel the class had a lab, then write down lab. The lady on the phone said that they usually take your word for it. And labs are not strictly benchwork; it can be a class like bioinformatics where the lab was computer based genomics.
