lab work - who does what?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
IUSD: Trim dies & mount casts for fixed, wax up the trial dentures for removeable. Waxing & casting our own gold work is optional (but something I enjoy).

Our fixed lab is a private lab working in the Phoenix area for the last 20 years, and they've moved their entire lab into our clinic building--so they're really easy to work with. Every other month we do a two day rotation in the fixed lab, where we practice waxing, watch them do procera crowns, invest gold crowns, learn more about shade matching, etc.

Our removable lab is not on-site.

We can do next to nothing if we wish. Example: for dentures, take a facebow, bite registration, and max. and mand. PVS impressions. Send that to the lab to be poured, mounted, articulated, and have lab set teeth in wax. I've done that. But to contrast that, I've also set teeth in wax and the whole shebang for dentures.

At Arizona we can do as much labwork as we wish, or as little as we wish.

which lab work is "better" the students usually or a person that has done it # of times....

UNLV is as much or as little as you wish. No requirements, thank God. 🙂

Fixed pros gets done by the lab (some is on site and some is off site) and our delivery is 8 working days. Removable pros is done by us and processed by our on site lab. You can have the lab equilibrate and polish if you want to wait the full 8 days, otherwise you get it back in 3.

Depends on how much time you want to put into it and how well you've developed your skills. A lab tech has done it hundreds of times more than you have but is only willing to put in a fraction of the time.

at Temple we do most of our own. We do all of our waxups. The lab flasks and processes our dentures after we have them all festooned. The lab also will cast base metal for PFMs and do the porcelain. Students do all the pindex, waxing, setting of teeth, making ortho appliances.
