On NBME 6 there is a question about the lac operon. I was told that the Lac-Operon was no longer being tested on the USMLE. So have any of you who have taken the test had the lac-operon come up on your test? Thanks alot.

If I'm not mistaken, Dr. Jenkins in DIT provided a handout on the lac operon. Also I'm almost positive I had a test question on it. However, I could be wrong because I took my test a couple of weeks ago and I'm undergoing the defense mechanism of repression. I was under the impression that the lac operon was fair game.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE post something in the subject about NBME 6 so people like me who haven't taken it yet don't look at your post and see exam content. (I'm actually taking NBME 6 tomorrow.) Obviously, it makes your practice score less valid if you have seen a question or questions ahead of time.

Since I've already seen your post, though, I'll attempt to answer your question. I just had a lac operon question yesterday on USMLEWorld, which indicates to me that it may still be exam-relevant material. There was actually a really nice, detailed explanation with the question that helped me understand the concept, which I had never fully grasped before. Where did you hear that it is no longer tested? I don't think the NBME really makes announcements about what material is fair game -- you basically have to assume that anything that came up during the first two years of med school and probably more (like undergrad, since people have been getting Gibbs Free Energy questions) could be tested.

It won't hurt to cram one more concept into your brain anyway.

P.S. If a professor told you they don't test certain material, I wouldn't trust it unless that professor actually writes questions for the NBME. At my school, we had a biostats lecturer tell us that number needed to treat/harm is not tested on Step 1, and yet it showed up multiple times on USMLEWorld, and a current 3rd year told me he had it on his exam last year.

USMLEWorld had at least a few questions on the lac operon, but I did not see it on my actual Step 1.

I had a lac operon question. I took the exam 2 weeks ago. I was also told it wouldn't be tested. I guess my professor was wrong. Luckily, I looked over it before the test. I hope I answered the question correctly.

I think it is fair game so is the indirect complement cascade,all the steps of tca cycle, the tryptophan operon, the kynin cascade and gibbs free energy ( anthrapology or anthropology or whatever the whack their name is)

You need to know the concepts! Know what an operator is vs an enhancer, promoter etc. What they do, where they are and their function are the important things to know...
